Here’s one for you folks with technical knowledge of bows. On the subject of finger pinch, I always thought that finger pinch only had to do with the angle of the string against the fingers drawing the string. The shorter the bow, the steeper the angle. However, I read here now and then that some short bows don’t have finger pinch. Would that have to do with lack of stacking in the bow or is it something else?

        Thanks! Happy 4th!! dwc

          David –

To me, stacking and finger pinch are entirely different, though they may sometimes seem to be related, since both are more common on shorter bows.

In my experience, “finger pinch” has a subjective component to it – some people feel it more than others, even when both are shooting the same bow, with the same draw length. I don’t think there is really any way to avoid finger pinch on really short bows, as pinch is entirely the result of string angle, and any short bow is going to unavoidably have a steeper string angle. But kind of like handshock – it seems to bother some people and doesn’t bother others. So when I hear someone say that a particular short bow “doesn’t pinch,” I take that to mean that it doesn’t produce noticeable pinch for that shooter.

On a related note, a prominent bowyer recently told me that he doesn’t believe that there is anything to the notion that short bows are any less “stable” to shoot than longer ones. Instead, according to him, shorter bows are more sensitive to a less than ideal release as a result of the steeper string angle. It might be a subtle distinction, but I tend to agree, and its an interesting thing to ponder…

So in the end, it still comes down to string angle and how we each feel the sting. Thanks very much! Enjoy the holiday. peace, dwc

That’s my understanding, but there are others on here that are far more knowledgeable than I – I’d be curious to hear if there are other thoughts on the matter.

              And happy Independence to all!!

I can tell you from my little experience with my supermag, as it is such a light draw bow compared to what I’ve been used to I was lazy with my string hand at first and experienced notable finger pinch. As long as I get good deep hooks and keep my hand ‘strong’ I don’t get any at all.

I could imagine someone who always shoots with a very relaxed string hand would report unavoidable finger pinch on the bow, while someone who shoots with a bit of an eagles claw string hand would wonder what heck rancho relaxo over there was talking about. Experiences may differ 😉

Fat fingers like mine kinda round out the angle:D

                  > = ) 😉

I’ve not shot any real short bows though, like 54″ and shorter. I can see where there may be some complications.

Let me amend this a bit.

I do have the old Shakespeare 54″ solid fiberglass bow but it’s 55# and I can’t shoot it well enough to make any finger pinch assessments.

I can tell you though that it ain’t as smooth as a glass laminated bow. :)It stacks rather quickly.

My comment on the stacking was that maybe when you hit the point where you have to pull harder to get more draw maybe it just hurt the fingers more. I have a 60 inch longbow, but I started on a 56 inch Browing Wasp. I never noticed anything, but then maybe I didn’t know enough to notice! dwc
