        Bird in the hand…

My 16-year-old daughter hunted for the first time in 2011 and didn’t so much as draw on a deer. A proper shot never offered itself, and she never tried to push the issue. Last year she couldn’t hunt due to ankle surgery, so this year I’m once again trying everything I can to get a deer in front of her. Whatever stand we think is best on our property is where she hunts. I go elsewhere to stay out of her way.

Wouldn’t you know, this eight-pointer showed up yesterday morning after the rain stopped, directly under the left side of my tree stand. I didn’t even have time to stand up. He started walking away and stopped 45 degrees right quartering away five yards from the base of the tree. It was an easy decision.

My arrow disappeared through the rear lobe of his right lung, went through his heart, caught the bottom of the front lobe of the left lung, and as usual, stuck in the dirt. I watched and heard him go down about 55 yards away.

So now it’s doe tags only for me for the rest of this season. There are a lot bigger bucks in our area, and nothing would make me happier than to have my daughter fill her first deer tag with one. But I’m content with a clean kill and a lot of fresh venison in the freezer.

Note: blaze orange was required this weekend in Wisconsin due to their youth firearms season.

That would be a trophy for me! Great shot. I hope your daughter gets her first! I am sure it would make for a proud Dad.

Congrats neighbor! What a neat looking deer! Good luck to your daughter as well! Mine’s 15 and in her second year. No success yet but some great encounters. I keep reminding her it took me 7 years before I got my first! So far, it’s still working!

Nice! I’m still working on filling a tag with my bow this season. You should post a picture of this kill in the 2013 Season Bulletin Board so it doesn’t just get lost down the stream.

I’ll add my late kudos. Just got back from a very hot, dry, miserable opening day and today, it was blowing and raining.

Came home early, but you MADE MEAT! WTG! ❗

Good job Jason, and nice pic too. Don’t worry about the orange. Once squirrel starts on Monday here I’ll be wearing it too. Have had some close calls while in tree stands with shotgun toting squirrel hunters. 😯

Great shot, nice deer and great meat for the freezer. When the opportunity presents itself for the right shot angle and you make the shot you should be proud. Congrats and best of luck to your daughter.
