Not sure how many of you chop your own feathers and if you do how many you chop. I chop a lot of feathers and have found that the standard hinge on the chopper if used a lot tends to bend making your feathers to come out very un-uniformed.
Here is what the hinge looks like on one right out of the box.
The pin is not the strongest and I guess if you don’t use the chopper a lot it might be alright, but I use mine a lot. When the pin starts bending your feather just don’t chop right and it makes for a lot of wasted feathers.
Here is what I did to fix that problem. Everything I used can be picked up at the local hardware store for under $10.
What this does is make the hinge very strong and the blade on the chopper contacts the feather the same everytime giving you some very uniformed feathers, chop after chop. Let me know if you have any questions about how I did this modification.
Oh and here are some feathers I chopped after making the mods.

That’s good stuff! I noticed just yesterday I could “customize” my feather length……by accident.
My blade slides left and right about 1/4 inch and IF I DONT PAY ATTENTION……..I get multiple lengths.
I hadn’t looked into making it more stationary just yet but that looks like that would work well.
Gotta pick up a LW shield chopper yet for some other feathers but I have a 3R Swift chopper. Big feather but I like the looks yet I have a couple uh…..LOTS of barred feathers already cut to length and while I can use the Swift chopper, I then have to reshape the forward part of the arrow since the Swift is a 5.5 inch.
God Bless

Glad I could help. I need a few more before I have a complete set of choppers. Will end up modifying all of them one of these days.
