I have a friend who has been shooting trad for a while but only recently dumped his expensive training-wheeler and is looking to upgrade to a good longbow. Having been a Shrew-head for a few years now I’m rusty on other good bows, and not certain that a really short bow like a Shrew is a good choice at this early stage, plus there’s the 14-month (or more) wait and he’s ready to rock ‘n roll. He likes Black Widow but not the price. I’m suggesting that he go with a bow in the 58-62″ length, deflex-reflex, and two-piece take-down. I’m hoping you can suggest some makers and models to check out. Thanks, dave

I can’t speak for a two-piece, as mine is a one piece longbow, but Leon Stewart makes some beautiful bows. His craftsmanship is superb and his bows are shooters. He makes a terrific three piece, long bow and recurves. When you see what he puts into them and compare them to an off the shelf bow, his prices are a good value. http://www.stewartsarchery.com is his website. A great craftsman and a great guy, he’s very also very active in traditional archery in his area.

Is he dead set on a 2 piece take down? Would he consider a 3 piece? Great Plains archery makes a great 3 piece. I don’t own one but have shot many and the people I know that do own them swear by them, not at then. http://www.greatplainsbow.com

The most important one thing I could suggest is to get the longest bow he can tolerate.

Longer bows of whatever design are more forgiving. Since it will be his first hunting bow, there will likely be others. So why not start out with the bow most likely to allow success?

These are the words of a crappy archer who has learned to compensate for his lack of skill by using a big tool 😯

I like long long bows. They work.

Dave both Bob Lee and Bob Sarrels build awesome takedown longbows. Not sure which I’d says is the best, guess that is up to the individual.

Oh and both of these guys are good ole Texas boys so you know they make some good bows……

I highly recomend talking to Ron King down at Fox archery. Ron builds a great bow and the sleeve type takedowns are a good strong join .

Steve Turay makes the Northern Mist Baraga in a two-piece takedown version.

Try Black Canyon Bows by Mike Hays in Pueblo, Co.

Thanks everyone for the good hints, from me and my friend Jody. In the end, after shooting several bows, he bought a Navajo “Apache” and is quite pleased with the looks, performance, and price. I personally had fun checking out some of your favorite bows. dave

I would second the quality and exact recommendation on these bows. Top notch.
