        Hey folks,

My friend Matt and I started teaching classes this winter, how to follow animal tracks, or trail them and find them. We had our first 3-day class last week. 4 people came up to take the class, and for 3 days we trailed elk, all day on one animal. Everyone improved in their ability to see tracks, recognize sign, and move along a trail. We saw lays, beds, feeding, looked at aging scat (and the development of maggots in the droppings), and saw some great scent marking and antler rubs.

Here are some pictures of the weekend of the group on the trail and some elk tracks.

Looked like cow tracks to me. No elk here.

Went backpacking in the late ’90s (after 10 years raising a kid) and kept seeing “cow tracks”. Wondered “Why are cows up here?” Then I saw a Moose. Scared the Scat out of me. In the ’70s when I did a lot of backpacking there were no Moose.
