This has been a long time coming, but my brother Chris and I finally connected on an elk in Colorado. OTC Public Wilderness unit, DIY.
The start was a 27 switchback, 3 mile trail that went 1 mile in elevation. We ended up 5 miles back from there at 11,400 feet.
My brother missed a nice bull on Wed. and killed this cow on the final morning Fri. before leaving.
We packed it out just in time to make our flight.
GPS said we hiked 54 miles that week. Not bad for a couple tenderfoots from the east.
My brother got two arrows into her before she crashed off from his 63@28 MOAB and hickory arrow.

Congratulations!! I wish I could have said the same of my experience on this years DIY hunt in CO. We were in 44 in the Squaw Creek Area. To hot, to many people, no elk and Locals changing the camping restrictions. Very frustrating after 1.5 years planning. My friend hunted their a few times and with the rifle and never experienced what we did this year.
Congrats again!!

Outstanding!
Success in a difficult hunt in hard country! and that young cow will be excellent table fare! Two arrows? sounds like you wanted to be sure she didn’t get away -haha.
A great time in the High Country–

I just got back this AM from a week of CO DIY hunting. All I have to show for it is blisters. No elk sighted, no elk heard. Well Done!

Congratulations to both of you. Sounds like you had a real adventure. Lots of memories

Great work! You have every right to feel good about your results. Fifteen days of bow season has gone by and I have not even gotten out of the city limits. Excellent elk hunting is only a 40 minute drive from my door. I am obviously doing something wrong.
Thanks for the inspirational photo.

Thanks for all the kind words. I do not think we could have had a more difficult hunt, but we prevailed on the last day.
It was very dry there compared to the previous year.
If the trophy is reflective of the effort puit in….That little cow is a trophy of immense proportions 🙂
Very tasty too! Keep at it everyone!
