Well early archery was a bust for me.
I took the 2 weeks of elk off with big plans, to bad the weather wasn’t on my side. I don’t like heat, I really don’t like to hunt in the heat! Add the 90+ degree days with clear full moon nights and all I really got was some good exercise.
I did sneak in some great red band fishing on the upper columbia with my dad (he’s visiting from Saudi Arabia).
Hope late season is alot more productive!

Well at least you got out there. Elk season was weird here, but not heat. Everything happened two weeks early and now the elk have disappeared. Not just from my turf but everyone I’ve talked with far and wide. I just came in (got a long-season cow tag) and again it was eerily quiet–not even the birds or squirrels were visible or vocalizing. Seems like every living thing out there sometimes goes quiet in synch. Sure am curious as to why but none of my bio friends have a clue either (“they don’t fund that kind of research”). Best laid plans …

Same. Had to work for it. And the past few days they have gotten a lot more secretive. But I’ve still been able to get them coming in, just haven’t been able to seal the deal. Still, it’s been a blast.

Check the Solunar Tables, I just looked at mine for my area. Major activity times are now at night. Chances are you got your bull around the full moon when Major activity times were in daylight hours. Just speculating but I do beleive in and pay attention to the moon phases in regard to wildlife movements. BTW – enjoyed A Man Made of Elk. good read!

I think deer eat when they are hungry. I’ve seen them aplenty when the solunar tables said they wouldn’t be there, and I’ve seen the opposite. As far as I’m concerned, tables are a waste of time unless someone has just set it with a plate full of backstraps. You have to be in the woods everytime you have an opportunity, and there are still no guarantees. Tables are good excuses though.
