I just watched Clays video and can’t figure out how to delete this post. My apologies

Never mind I just watched Clays video…

When I lived in MT, good man at the Fish & Wildlife would nurture injured animals back to health and release them.
He was a health nut. Ate raw fish too at times. Always in the back country…
He got deathly ill. I watched this hard as nails man waste away to nearly nothing… they tried everything. Finally turned out he had beaver fever (can’t spell that real name) from drinking out of alpine waters!
Beavers are everywhere. Liver Eating Johnson would be beside himself.
I won’t do it now, drink from streams. he recovered but barely. Seeing that made me a 1st hand believer! No way to tell if crystal clear mountain water today has been exposed to animal waste sufficiently to have giar—that word (beaver fever cysts)

Giardia is a genus of anaerobic flagellated protozoan parasites of the phylum Sarcomastigophora.
This the one Doc? 😀
Just tryin to make it easy on ya. 😉
As a young’n in Idaho we drank out of anything and everything nearly and we’re still here. Not today for me.
I think, IMHO, the the microbes and enzymes in some folks’ system adapt to some situations. Example, my mom and dad’s well at Mesa, Co, coolest, most refreshing tasting water you could want, they drank it forever, would make me sicker than a dog when I went back to visit.
I think their systems had adapted and mine had “un-adapted”. 😉
That was back in the day though and I might have been adapted too much to “Colorado Kool-Aid” Dunno. Got me out of some haying a time or two.
Funny thing too, how the haying always just happened when I came to visit. Gotta think on that some. 😀
Better to be safe than sorry me says!!!:)

Yup, Ralph….da, da, dats da one! there are more vowels from VAna White on the end of the disease from the giardia cyst…easily filtered out, though…not so of some of the leached chemicals.
That home well water thing made me smile. Buddy married an upstate New York gal. Her Mom REFUSED to put mayonnaise in the fridge…daughter went away to school, learned it was deadly to not do so and tried to convince her mom. NOPE!
One younger brother still lived at home and ate her salads made with this tainted stuff…
Daughter refused to let her family touch tater, macaroni or other salads with the Mayo in them.
So, the younger bro moves to W. NY state to work on a farm. Comes home for a summer reunion and gobbles up the tater salad… ends up a week in the ICU at the hospital…food poisoning.
Indeed, our bodies can build a tolerance for some stuff…but it’s not permanent… kid almost died on his return after 6 mos away from that crud!
Dear sweet elderly lady lived next door to me upstate PA…cold packs meat and low acid beans, etc. Never got sick. I know better. I’d croak! Even if you cook it LONG enough to kill the botulism bacteria, it releases an enzyme on death that takes 240* to break down…and it too, will kill! If it ain’t pressure canned, I don’t eat canned meat or fish!
Can’t be too careful. We’ve fouled our own nest and now we have to live with and in it!

Not so sure it is all us. Back in the 60s and 70s we didn’t have so many large animals out there. Bear, moose, turkeys, and deer have repopulated our forests (at least here in new England). I’m thinking a lot od the chit in the water is from the animals that have been reintroduced.
Bears DO shit in the woods, you know.

Yup…they sure do, Grumpy! LOL
what they found (or at least reported in MT back in the 80’s) was that the fact that tremendous #’s of hikers, campers, fisherman were going into the backcountry and…and TAKING THEIR DOGS… was the cause of the spread of Giardia.
They’d crawled around I guess looking for “samples” and found that the leaching of backpacker’s deposits and their dogs, seeped into ground water and into watersheds and the Beaver picked up the cyst and then when beaver colonies disperse the young, they carried it with them, but MAN and his BEST FRIEND were the ground zero source.
Whatever. It’s there! No matter clarity, swiftness or cold ness… I find some perking right out of the ground… and with all the septic systems, I’d not trust such a spring source anymore either.
Doesn’t really matter HOW it started, it’s well entrenched now along with other contaminants. Along with all the chemicals around the globe in Antarctica’s ice pack, etc.

I can guarantee that some of the streams I drank out of as a kid would have me curled up in a knot these days – if not laid low.
Clay’s video has some decent points, but I’ll filter and/or chemically treat whenever I’m not in my specific area of frequency.
