Hi Everyone,
First time posting. Big fan of Traditional Bowhunter and traditional archery in general. I have been shooting an Old PSE Sequoia for about 10 years and it says that it is 50# at 28 inches but I weighed it on a bow scale today and it was pulling about 44# @ 28 inches. Is that normal for an old bow? Does draw weight decrease over time? Is there something wrong with the bow? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Jon

As I recall, the industry standard for marking a bow is plus or minus 3 lbs, So, if the bow weight at the factory was between 47 and 53 lbs, it would be marked “50”. Also those spring actuated devices for weighing a bow are not all that accurate anyway. Sort of like a bathroom scale that always seems to weigh heavy.
Unlike an all wood bow, a fiberglass bow doesn’t seem to lose much draw weight over time.

As I get older the bathroom scale keep on weighing heavier…not enough fiberglass in it I guess….
The weight variation in older bows seems to be kind of a common thing even though your 6 lbs seems more so that what I’ve seen.
I have an old Grizzly, I’ve been told by some more knowledgeable than I that it’s a ’67’ model, and it’s marked 45# on the limb and under the side plate. It actually weighs 49 lbs on two different scales.
I have calibrated my hanging scale with a 50# set of weights so it might be(?) somewhat accurate. Never really know for sure like rgrist be saying.
I do know my 54# has increased in weight over the past 10 years. So logic goes out the window….

Oh man I didn’t know draw weights can vary like that. My situation still seems weird though. I’ve been shooting bamboo arrows that looked like they were spined well a year ago but now are shooting super stiff when I bare shaft tune them. Would it be that the arrows stiffened up over a year? My draw length and anchor do not vary a whole lot.

It is possible that your brace height has decreased.
Might want to check that. If your brace height has decreased it would explain the low draw weight and the stiff arrow behavior.
