Well all you guys have helped so far,so here I go again! I settled for the Eclipes Broad heads, love them. But I tell you what,it took me forever to put an edge on them! I thought I might try some other “Sharp out of the box Heads” but if I shot the darn thing I’d have to sharpen it. Am I being lazy or is there something out there that I can buy that will make the job easier. Please don’t get me wrong,I know its part of the Traditional thing, and I enjoy doing it. To sharpen your own heads and stuff, but I’m having a real hard time getting a shave your arm edge on them, and its really what I want. I’m not really sure if I’m getting the 25dig. that is recommended. Just wondering if I’m missing something. Thanks…Wade

Don’t worry about “this degree” or “that degree;” just sharpen them the way they’re ground. The use of a protractor has never been part of my sharpening routine, and I don’t think that any of the animals I’ve killed are any less dead because of it. Sometimes, I think we tend to overcomplicate things just for sport. 😉

Wade — There are many good sharpeners on the market but for two blades it seems everyone who has tried it is really happy with the KME knife sharpener (yes, it works equally well on knives and broadheads). It has an adjustable angle device to put you where you want and prevent rounding-off of edges which is common to freehand sharpening. Works on both double- and single-bevels. Google KMI Sharpeners and you’ll find some really helpful how-to videos there. I was in your boat on sharpening until I found the KME. No, I don’t own stock in the company. 😉 I just really like the product and respect the owner, Ron “Sharpster” Swartz (though I’d like to see him post here more often). Worth checking out. DP

Sorry, Dave. It’s the editor in me! 😆

              “Google KME Sharpeners” not KMI

Robin — Ah, with my wife gone to England, it’s so good to have another woman to keep me in line! 😉 (“If a man speaks in the forest and there is no woman there to hear him, is he still wrong?”) Seriously, thanks. I rarely drink or smoke before breakfast, so I have no excuse!:oops: dummydave

I like to keep it simple. So I use the carbide sharpeners that you just drag over the blade. It always works for me and I end up with no hair on my left arm mid way through archery season.

Alaska Bowhunters Supply has a single bevel sharpener that I just bought a while back. It is very nice. 3Rivers has the same style but for a regular double bevel edge. Then there is the good old bear carbide sharpener for about 5 bucks. I had a green bear carbide sharpener for 15 years. I gave it to a friend last year and he is still using it.

No moving parts, goes in the pocket.

I bought some Abowyer heads that are pre sharpened and coated with plastic to keep them that way. They were sharpened on the paper wheel system. They are very sharp. But no sharper than I get them with my trusty carbide sharpener 😀

Thanks Dave, welcome back Robin: Yeah I went to Eclipse web site and read up on their how to page. Went back out with a file in one hand, and Bud lite in the other! When I was done you could shave with them. I didn’t think about the rounding off factor! Good point,I’ll order me a KME sharpener, saw them earlier before I posted. I think I’m getting it bad. I’m ordering a Spike Tent from Montana Canvas along with a stove. I have most of the other camping gear I need. Getting all the maps and liteture on Units 71,and 711 near Dolores, and Duntin in the NW. area of Colorado for next Sept. So if anyone has advise,i’m all ears…Thans again Wade. Oh did I mention I bought a Elk call!(could be crazy but I’m going for it)

Sounds like you’ve got’er figured out Rebstud. Just don’t try the, “file in my teeth and a Bud Light in both hands” trick. Bleeding is for Elk, not for us. My best luck in Col. has always been the last 2 weeks of the season. More bugleing and better weather. Dave has the early season ticket with his water holes. You should probably stay away from area 17 and Rabbit Ears Pass because that is my back-up spot, just SW of Rand. On the other hand, if your that close, we could help get each others elk out. Good Luck and Stick a Big’in. Buzzard
