I’m looking for pics and opinions of the differnt styles of take down systems. I’ve built several three piece takedown recurves and longbows, but I’d like to try building what looks like a one piece recurve and yet be able to break it down to two pieces for travel. I’ve used the metal in metal sleeve on selfbows and thought about using one, but I’m interested in seeing and hearing about the other styles.

        Show me what you have.

This is my pic of my Bama Expi Royal takedown, when together looks like a one piece! You can’t tell its a Takedown!

I don’t have a picture at hand, but the BowBolt is used by many custom bowyers, including Shrew, and is quite popular with avocational bowyers as well. Only problem is, it’s a bit pricey.

              David,

Believe it or not, but I have two of the bow bolts in my stash of building supplies. Only problem is I’ve never installed one and have no idea how to go about it. I traded for them several years ago.

One of the finest takedown longbows on the market today…

Black Widow’s design is second to none. You can’t even tell its a takedown and its beavertail grip is awesome.

I like the looks of the takedown system on the Bama and BW bows.

Question? How hard are they to put together or pull apart?

I’ve used the metal sleeve system and if made right they should fit tight enough to require quite a bit of force to put together and pull apart. Otherwise, when unstrung they will fall apart.

                        Troy,

My Bama Expedition is also the Take-down model. Per my review elsewhere on Tradbow, Nate uses a carbon sleeve that is very snug. It’s easy to put together: my estimate would be about 10-15 lbs. of force required to insert the sleeve. Taking it apart in another matter!

There is no falling apart, as is requires about 45-50 lbs of pulling force. In fact, once its together, you’d never know it was a take-down as it’s rock solid.

Ripforce, is this also your experience with your take-down?

Hope this helps you in your quest Troy!

                        Merry Christmas all,

Heres a couple of mine. The bolt is an excellent system when the riser is built for it. Does add some weight to the bow for those that like a heavier (mass weight) bow.Easy enough to install with a drill press. Craig is great with instructions.

I personally prefer the carbon/fiberglass sleeve. Light and strong and the grip can be designed to any style you like.

The worries of proper riser material is my holdback on using one of the bowbolts I have. I really like the looks of the fiberglas/carbon sleeves. It would allow me to shape the grip as I want.

I know there are several other styles of two piece connections out there. I’ve seen one that looks like an “L” and one that was a double dovetail. Does anyone have anything else to show?

Big Jim has a series of videos on how to build the takedown system like the one used by black widow. Check it out here. Big Jim’s video page…

                                wTK,

Watched the video and found that this method is about the same as I have done in the past with selfbows. Didn’t use carbon in the wrap, instead I used a thin steel strip along the back and belly of the handle section at about the placement he put in the carbon. Also didn’t slope the section cut. I also used the wrap method to secure everything when splicing billits together.

                                Thanks for the link.

Here’s my Diamondback T/D, just the basic limb-bolt 3-piece system here, it makes for a shorter package when taken down than a 2 piece, but leaves a bit to be desired looks-wise(I still like it though). If you have big hands it is good because the riser is thicker with more mass than a 2 piece and gives it good balance/pointing characteristics.

                                    Lee,

Yep, thats the standard style takedown I’ve built for several years now.

I’ve been toying with the idea of building a one piece looking bow, but want to be able to atleast break it down to two pices for travel.

As it stands right now I think I’m going to use the fiberglass and carbon sleeve method if I deside to build one.
