My hunting partner and I have a disagreement. He says there is sientific proof that black tail deer are unable to sent or smell human urin. I disagree. Has any one ever heard of such a thing?

Well, having been downwind of a baby in a wet diaper ,,,,and knowing how rank a rutting buck smells ,,,,I DISAGREE . I have read of hunters who claim they wizz right from the treestand with no ill effects on the hunt. I don’t practice what they preach.

Best approach in my opinion is to LEAVE all human scent OUTSIDE the areas of stands , blinds and so forth.

It’s been proven that they can’t differentiate human urine from any other mammal. I regularly let fly from the stand. Ive never seen a deer show any fear from it. Had a big doe come along two years ago and lick it off of the leaves.

I’ve also regularly “freshened” up scrapes and had them get worked within a few hours.

What goes in comes out. It would seem that what a person has been eating and drinking, including medications, would have a huge impact on the flavor and intensity of urine, thus how “spooky” it is to game. Whether deer are bothered by the stench of human urine or not, I am. And it draws flies. I like to keep my stand areas, ground or tree, clean and smelling of nature. So I use a pee bottle.

Thank you for your response and you and I agree. We go to such great lengths to mask our sent and conceal our presense in an area, why be so bold and take a chance.

Tell him to eat a bunch of asparagus and go leak in the woods and see if that bothers the deer 😉

Here’s a little blurb that summarizes a study done at the University of Georgia.

According to biologist Dr. Karl Miller with the University of Georgia, all animal urines are very complex. Each sample contains hundreds of chemicals related to the physiology and diet of the animal from which it came. Miller attested that there is a chemical difference between the urine of every animal, however, that does not mean that human urine contains anything that will spook a deer any faster than fox or coyote urine.

Human urine does not contain human scent in the way that deer have come to recognize it and associate it with danger, it merely smells as urine, quite possibly no different than a coon or fox and based on recent test, it may be even closer to deer unrine!

A scrape test was performed using doe, buck and human urine. Buck urine got the most positive response; A scrape with doe urine got less attention than one with nothing in it at all and all urines got some amount of positive response.

In conclusion, out of four biologists all felt that human urine would not spook deer! Carry a bottle if ya like but there is no scientific reason for it.

Two years ago, my son and I were on a mock scrape kick ( yeah, they really do work!) We started several different scrapes, one with just human pee. After “freshening” it several times, the deer started to join right in. In fact, there was a natural scrape nearby that sort of went dormant once this one was opened up.

There was also a scrape near one of our stands… I had my son “freshen” it every time he left the stand. (Not a problem, kid always has to pee). That scrape became one of the primaries in the area (used primarily at night though – at least by the deer)

In years previous to this, I would have argued against these practices, but that season really changed my thinking!

I let fly too from the stand.:D And I’ve watched deer directly below me sniffing the wet leaves, standing in it, and casually wagging their tails, and going about their business.

I don’t purposely pee all over the woods, but when I have to go, I have to go, and I’m not keen on carrying a bottle of my own urine on my person…LOL! I’ve shot enough deer over the years, and seen enough reactions to my urine to come to the conclusion that it doesn’t bother them.

I have seen plenty of blacktail react to where a human has btaking a pee. Then I have seen them show no raction to other spots people have peed .I think its what happens around the area what scent did you leave along with the urine. What your diet is could have a big effect on the scent.

let it go! out of the stand or wherever! Bagged enough deer to know they don’t mind it and yes it does work on scrapes!

I don’t get to hunt many White Tails. but in Mule deer country, Urine from humans dosn’t seem to bother them. I once hunted with a female who would pee close the tree stand. What I did notice was when the temp. got higher during the day, the spot would attract Bee’s. When some cow elk came in that didn’t bother them either. Since I have trapped fur, I know for a fact you don’ want to pee close to a set. I would think you don’t want to pee out of you stand, simply because you don’t want one of those curley hairs falling on the ground. That is going to bust you. My family uses their hair to keep deer outa their gardens.
