We are looking for suggestions and advice for either a self guided Elk hunt or drop camp in Colorado. Mainly areas to hunt,

season, places to avoid, (outfitters included) etc.  Thanks

I Havn’t hunted CO in a long time thus can’t give any pertinent / current info on best areas to hunt etc . From past experience you will have to go high in most good areas, so I would study up on upper elevation mountain hunting- if you are not already experienced with same.

Having been involved in the guide/outfitting business I would not go the drop camp route unless you can pick where the camp is placed, and make sure any equipment rented is in good operational shape. Best areas of the outfitters hunting grounds are usually kept for the better paying clients ie fully outfitted/guided. Some outfitters( and ranches) will contract to pick up your downed game – nice on a elk hunt.

Hopefully some other members with recent experience will add some info.

Good luck on your hunt and let us know how it goes—-

Hey Maddawg. I went to Colorado last year for the first time. I can’t give you names of where to hunt since it was a friend’s location. But it was great fun. There seems to be elk all over the western half of the state. And I don’t think you could go wrong with most units. It was a ton of fun and awesome country.
