Can anyone tell me roughly the number of elk in Colorado? Read somewhere around 280000. Thanks

Colorado state wildlife says 265000 with a 23 bulls per 100 cows ratio.

It will be 265000 minus 1 after I kill mine, bull or cow!!!8)

Wow, impressive! Here in Alberta, herd size is estimated at 25000. Colorado is about 270000 sq. km, while Alberta is about 662000sq.km!

CO has far more elk than the advertised number, which is consistently reduced to keep the public land welfare ranchers from complaining even more than they already do about the wildlife eating “their” forage. The bull:cow ratio is misleading because they count any branch-antlered bull as mature, which they definitely are not insofar as in a healthy balanced herd even 5×5 bulls rarely get to breed and the raghorns don’t have a chance. So biologically the mature bulls (5×5 and up) are less than half what they advertised. But then the average hunter is happy to bag any legal bull, so the deceit isn’t that harmful to hunters, but it’s very harmful when management claims they have achieved sufficient mature bull/cow ratios when they’re not even close and manage, or mismanage, accordingly . In that case it’s a damn lie.

The bottom line is that CO has more elk than any other state or province, and some really good ones if you can get away from roads and ATV trails, far away. The machines and technology are killing elk hunting here.

I was impressed that you guys have almost 10 times more elk than us, and you about a third the size!

Everything’s big in Texas, oh:oops: I think I will say whoops and try to cover my bad taste in humor and say everything except elk herds and it’s sad, what here is in fences. 😳

Sorry, sick humor. Grand Mesa my old stomping grounds. Used to be bunches of elk on my aunt’s place east of Mesa, close to Molina, and at my folks west of Mesa a bit.

Kentucky has over 10,000 elk now, they are just in the eastern part of the state, some have crossed into West Virginia and Virginia. Maybe one day I can hunt elk in my home state.

Odds to draw in Kentucky for out of state are not very good and I don’t think you build points.

PA is the same way. Think they release about 1 non-resident tag.
