Carbon arrows for a 35# bow.

Hullo folks.

So I went Squirrel hunting today and actually managed to arrow one. Thing is I should have arrowed at least three others that managed to dodge my arrows.

Now right off the bat I thought it was bow noise. But when I shot it at some bales later and realised how quiet the bow really is, I began to think that maybe my arrows are flying slow enough for the little buggers to see and evade them.

My current setup is a 30 inch 40/45 cedar arrow with three 5 inch fletch and 150 grain heads. Total weight close to 500 grains.

So I am thinking perhaps the answer is to shoot a lighter arrow, say 350 grains. Perhaps the extra speed from the lower weight will make the arrows harder for the tree rats to dodge?

So I was wondering what spine of carbon would I need for a 30 inch arrow? My info is as follows…

35# centershot longbow

28 inch draw length

30 inch arrow

150 grain tip weight

Per the chart on 3Rivers ( http://www.3riversarchery.com/pdf/ArrowCharts.pdf ) you would be right on the line of a 500 and 400. Now my $0.02, did you think about dropping to a 100 gr. (or less) point? Between that and shortening the fletchings a bit, you should get a little speed back. Hope it helps. Be well.

You’ll need a .600 spine shaft…a .500 or .400 spine shaft would require a lot of weight up front, major weight!! And even with the .600 spine out of a 35# bow, you’ll need a heavier weight insert to soften the spine a bit.
