Hi Guys
As we’ve come to know and trust each other this place has become for all of us a source of info, advice, a sounding board and sometimes, just a cyber shoulder to cry on!
It is those reasons I need put something out there near and dear to my heart. I usually won’t cheerlead a specific person, place or thing unless I really feel its worthy of note.
Well, I believe this is :
Tollgate Traditional Archery, in Central NY State, is closing its doors after the owners, George and MarCie Catlin’s more than 50 + years in the archery biz.
George is a piece of living history, having known many of the greats, including Glenn St Charles. He and MarCie are always quick to give tip/lesson, friendly advice etc etc. they are what a shop SHOULD BE! Not the Big Box Super Sport Shop that we’ve unfortunately become accustomed too.
I don’t want to drone on here but I believe credit needs to be given where it’s due. These are the folks that have made it possible for us to do our thing, paving the way, and helping propel archery, especially our type of archery, to the popularity it enjoys today.
After years of life love and laughs, sweating through good and bad economies and all the other concerns of a shop owner, George and MarCie are closing up, selling off and moving to be near their daughter and family in Washington.
If you by the shop, drop in or check out the website TollgateTraditions.com
Show some love and respect to these great folks. Tell ’em John from NJ sent ya!
Be well >>>–>

Thanks for letting us know about George and MarCie. I hope they enjoy retirement. That’s a long way to go from New York to Washington state! Best of luck to them.

Yes, Indeed. They run a great shop. And are wonderful people. George & Marcie have always kept the “tradition” alive, and run an Annual Traditional Shoot each year on Valentine’s Day Weekend. Which happens to be this Sunday! As usual there are approx. $2,000.00 in prizes to the top 20 shooters. And great fun to be around the company of other Traditional Archers. If you happen to be able to make it to their Shop on Route 20 in West Winfield this Sunday…. looks like this is the last event.
Sad to hear they are closing shop. But happy for their retirement.

Hey Steve
Didn’t know you frequent that area? Great folks, cool place. I’ve learned quite a bit from them. Little bit of a hike, takes about 50mins to hour from my place in So West corner of Adirondacks.
I love it there in the big woods and love my not-frequent-enough trips to chat with George and Marcie. I was hoping to get to the Trad Shoot this Sunday but, alas 👿 , unexpected sales meeting early Monday am reared it’s ugly head!!
You get up that way much??

Hi, JS.. yees, I actually have a few acres over in Schoharie County, we plan to retire on. Beautiful area.
I am in the same boat as you 👿 but I may still try and get there if I can. Although from where I am in Dutchess it’s quite a hike to get there.
