Anyone here have one? I kick the can about one now and then. I would just use it around the house to wrap up with or as a bed spread. Maybe to camp too? Do they get dusty and dirty, require much special care? And, if anyone can recommend one and a trusted source my ears are up!

Can’t help with this one but share your desire.

I love the American Bison. I too thought about getting anything with buffalo.
I know Ron LaClair wears one. Go to the Leatherwall forum site and do a search or post there, I am sure old Ron will oblige.
FYI, they are very expensive!
I would a pair of fingerless buffalo wool gloves(blended with buffalo/merino). very nice.

I don’t have one but a friend does. We’re both members of the American Mountain Men (1800’s historical reenactment group). The buff robe is very heavy to sleep under but very warm. Not quite as warm sleeping on top but gives a nice cushion. Hard to carry under primitive conditions without a horse or mule. If you’re not bound to following historical accuracy, you have no problem carrying it on an ATV or similar. Pretty spendy just to wear as a robe around the house. For alot less money you could be well served by a wool blanket (Pendleton or similar, not military surplus) if your only use is indoors.
Only special care is to keep it away from wool moths. They will eat holes through the fur. Like anything else, they can get dusty but a good shaking or tumble in the dryer (no heat) will solve that issue.
Best prices I have seen commercially are from Crazy Crow Trading Post in Texas. Or you might get lucky if you live near someone who raises buffalo commercially.

“The buff robe is very heavy to sleep under but very warm.” It helps to remove the buffalo from the hide…:D
This thread reminded me of when I photographed John Coates Jr., a jazz pianist who lived in mid-New Jersey and played the Deer Head Inn every Saturday night for decades. He had a whole room full of buffalo memorabilia. One time he said something about liking buffalo, American Bison, and people started giving him stuff. He had an amazing accidental collection of buffalo things from Native American made things to ash trays and lamps. Since they were gifts, he couldn’t part with them so he put them in a room dedicated to the stuff. Wonder where it all is now.
best, dwc
