This slide show contains photos of my father-in-laws longbow. It was made by a local amateur bowyer, Roy Gearhart, around 1983/84, and was made of walnut, from a 12 foot plank that was lying in the old chicken house for about forty years. My father-in-law, Buck, gave Roy the plank for the promise of a bow from it.
The Winged Stick, “Bucks Bow”….was the result. Clear glass over the walnut lams and walnut handle riser with a strip of clear glass between. It’s 60” and about 44#, and shoots a very quick arrow for that modest weight.
Buck left us April 11th, at the age of 96 1/2. He wanted me to have the bow, so I intend to use it this fall for hunting whitetails and small game. Buck was not only my father-in-law, he was a best friend, hunting buddy, and personal story-teller deluxe. I love him dearly and will miss him immensely. But this year, he will hunt with me again, in the form of Buck’s Bow. 8^).
