We’ve all seen archery depicted in movies at one time or another. From Native Americans in old westerns to Battle scenes in Braveheart, archery has been in many, many films. Sometimes its very good, and….well, sometimes not so much.

What is your favorite scene, your favorite shot, movie ?

What’s your favorite archery movie moment ??

Oh! And that scene in The Gladiator where, again, Russell Crowe has the Roman army raining flaming arrows and Greek fire down on the biker type Barbarians!

There’s a great montage in Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood movie when he’s got all the peasants making bows and arrows, training for battle. It’s a like a medieval Rocky Balboa ‘Getting Strong’ kind of deal. During the montage 3 peasants draw back their English longbows, aim and release. Cuts to target (a man shaped dummy stuffed with hay). Two arrows sail off to the side, the third hits, but the draw was so short and underpowered the arrow just bounces off. I laugh every time.

Happened to catch a new[er] series on Netflix called “Arrow”. Pretty much a superhero flick (?based on “Green Arrow”?). Nice thing is, he uses a recurve. Even beats the “bad guy” who’s a compound shooter. Pretty neat little series. Got through Season 1. Season 2 costs $, so I’ll wait until it’s free. 😉

Otherwise, liked the shot at the apple in the pig’s mouth in “Hunger Games”.

“War of the Arrows” definitely had its moments. Especially love the 2# broadhead. How’s that for FOC? 😆 I’d love to find out the spine on that arrow.

I have yet to see the “original” Robin Hood. I’d love to see Howard Hill shoot.

Ah, yes, forgot that one. Travolta and De Niro. It didn’t get good reviews, but like you said, it’s a fun one.

I’ve been disappointed in the archery form demonstrated in virtually all of the films mentioned here, whatever their other merits. However, if you’re Kiera Knightley I guess getting your dominant eye down next to the fletching isn’t a big concern. In fact, I didn’t even notice that for quite a while… Don

My favorite is also from the Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood. He has two Of the Sheriff’s men charging and Kevin strips both arrows cock feathers with his teeth and places both arrows on the bowstring together and quickly shoots both men off their horses! Awesome! Horserod

Seriously though my favourite on screen I have seen is Art Young in Alaska. There’s one shot from that film that always lurks in my day dreaming mind. A big horn sheep angling up some absurd piece of loose, coverless slope, Young appearing out of one of the hillside’s deep wrinkles and releasing. The sheep tumbles, dead and graceless down the hillside.

It is a scene so fantastic and exotic to me. Like something out of those old Boys Own Adventure comics. It’s a beautiful piece of cinema.
