I found out something by acident that could be quite helpful especially if you do any night hunting for pigs like I do. I bought a new hat light (one of the cheap ones that clip to the brim) and didn’t pay attention that I had bought a “Blue” one. When I finished hunting for the evening, I turned it on and found out that some of the Bohning paint that I used to crest my arrows glowed in the blue light. This has turned out to be really helpful finding arrows, even ones I’ve lost during the day. I just wait till it gets dark and take my blue light and look for them. Here is an example.

Here is an arrow crested with this paint.

Here is what it looks like in a bush after dark when the blue light is shined on it.

Good info, Derek. And great photos. One question: I notice in the dark photo that the feathers are glowing also, and seems safe to say you didn’t paint them. So is it the paint that’s reflecting under the blue light, or the bright colors? I would be useful to sort this out, since some of us, like me, don’t use cresting. Seems that any easy test would be to lay out a few feathers — or cover the painted shaft so that only the fletching shows — and test under the light. Thanks, dave

Dave those are AMG Flo-Yellow feathers and the only one’s I’ve tried so far that have the glow affect. I’ve got some Trueflight Flo-Yellow feathers that just came in that I’m going to give a try later this evening.

Derek — I too am anxious to see the results of your testing with the feathers. They only do the florescents in yellow? No biggie. Just curious. Thanks, Homer

                      The rest of the story…

It appears that the fletch also glows, so I tested the following colors:

                      1 – Trueflight Lime Barred
2 – Trueflight Bright Yellow Orange Barred
                      3 – Trueflight Orange
                      4 – Trueflight Lime
                      5 – AMG Lime
                      6 – AMG Orange
                      7 – AMG Hot Pink
                      8 – AMG Flo Yellow

From the testing shown above, the Trueflight Lime, AMG Lime, AMG Orange and AMG Flo Yellow all show up well under the blue light, so the cresting paint isn’t required, but it does help.
