Greetings to the group…I have made a couple oak bows in the past and both have been right around 40 lb @ 28″…

one broke but using the other regularly….just picked up a new board for a new bow….may use fiberglass as a backing..(hope thats not

too un-traditional:()..i’m looking for around 55-60 lbs but am not sure what length would be best….70″…80″…90″?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

        Thanks

        Tom

If you are going to put fiberglass on the back, you better plan on putting it on the belly too. Otherwise, your bow will be short lived.

I’m a fan of fiberglass. Some claim it isn’t traditional. I don’t care. But for the sake of arguement, Egyptians were using glass five thousand years ago. So if a traditional thing must be qualified by someone else having already done a thing, then I point to our desert ancestors along the nile. Admittedly they weren’t putting it on bows, except as ornamentation maybe. But hay, nobody’s perfect 🙄

The only real advice I can give you on the matter is to evaluate why you are making the bow. And commit to either an organic bow (all carbon based materials) or a classic bow (carbon and silicon).

There are good reasons for going in either direction. But mushing the two together usually results in disappointment.

A good read full of wisdom and technique is Dean Torges book, Hunting the Osage Bow. His website is worth a read too: http://www.bowyersedge.com

thanks for your input…greatly appreciated….guess I’m making and using instead of buying and using…I’m probably too cheap on that front….my only real caveat in materials is not to use PVC though there are some fine ones out there that I have seen….cant seem to drop hundreds of $ on something I can make and have fun in the making…..have made my own arrows….looks easier than it is I have found….they are easy if you dont care how they fly :)…..prolly will end up with a recurve at some point just not there yet…think I may try rawhide for the backing after recommendations from other builders….will see how it turns out….time to find some patience and do it right 🙂

              thanks again

There was some research done in the ’30’s that showed backing a bow with rawhide reduced it’s ability to cast an arrow by 4 or 5 fps. It will help protect the bow, but that’s about it.

If you back the bow with silk, or sinew, you can protect the bow, and add speed.

                  Thomas,

I second Steve’s recommendation to pick of Dean Torges info it is well worth it. I have his video and have watched it multiple times. I typically make glass longbows but lately I have had some fun building some board bows using Osage backed with Hickory.

When using glass do you use it as a backing or cover the hole schlameel?

The glass bows I make are laminated bows with glass on back and belly.

Steve, on your recommendation I checked out http://www.boyersedge.com. That guy’s a hoot. I didn’t even get to the archery part, just his words of wisdom. Well worth the look. Thanks! Dwc

Torges does have an fun style to read. He seems to have tapered off on his writing over the last few years though, our loss.

His video on building a bamboo backed bow is good too.

I have made quite a number of board bows and backed every one of them with hickory. If I do my tillering correctly, I haven’t had one break yet.

If you go with about an 70-80″ bow I’d use about 1/8-3/16″ hickory backing. I use epoxy on my backing also, never had one separate, where I have had separation with traditional glues.

When I build up the riser/shelf area, I place a couple staples in the wood, trimming them down to just enough proud to catch your fingers. Then glue them up and clamp together. The staples will keep them from sliding around during clamp up.

Thanks for all the comments….quick report….did a rawhide backing on a red oak board…about 75″ long….went great…tillered to 53lbs @28″….put some stain and gloss to it and was looking great….then….:(….pow…snapped right where the stave and handle meet….very dissapointing as I’m sure you all can attest….thinking about trying to adapt whats left into a take-down with some aluminum rectangular tubing….made 3 oak bows and all 3 failed…was able to keep one going with some glass but it is weakening now. Maybe time to get some real bow wood and properly back it….but dang…thought I had a good one….

Try the hickory. Just don’t make it too thin.

Just a quick google search shows 3rivers has some, probably already trimmed to correct thickness.
