are black widow bows worth paying 900-1000 dollars? or u just mainly buying a name? dont get me wrong there very pretty bows! but are they worth that much?
-
I sure do think so. They have an incredibly smooth draw and very durable. I have dropped mine from 20 ft. in a tree. No issues at all.
The customer service is ridiculously good. I had mine for 1 year and saw Roger with Black Widow at a trad shoot. I had noticed two or three tiny (maybe 3 mm long) white marks under the glass on my limbs. I showed them to Roger just to see what it may be. He said that it was totally a cosmetic issue that they sometimes see with bamboo and it will never affect the bows performance. Then he said.. “What kind of limbs do you want to replace them with? Any kind. I will make them and have them to you in 8 weeks”. 7 weeks later I had new Kingwood limbs. For really no reason at all he gave me brand new $700 limbs.
I know there was absolutely nothing wrong with my old limbs because I just finished smoking the 3d shoot.Love the bow.

This is a quote from another thread:
tjconrads wrote: I am shooting a Black Widow longbow right now: 64″, 56# @ 28″ draw. I also shoot one that is the same except two pounds heavier. I used to shoot a Robertson longbow that was 69# and shot the same arrow at 197 fps, but the hinge blew out in Africa and I found that the BW shot much smoother and much faster at much less poundage. Design improvements in many bows today allows us to drop a lot of weight off our draw.

Turtlebunting, this question of yours is a good one and I hope you find the answer you are looking for. On my end of it, Black Widow Bows are definitely worth every penny. I own two of their longbows and I couldn’t be happier with their quality, craftsmanship, and durability. They are smooth to shoot and when I have the right combination of arrows, they shoot where I am looking. My 63lb PLX is simply the finest bow I have ever shot. The gentlemen at Black Widow are outstanding to work with and have always been quick to answer any questions I might have. That said, I am one of the bowhunters who love all kinds of different makes and models of bows. I would never claim that one bow company is the absolute best, personally I find ignorance when someone proclaims that “these bows are the finest ever made”. Heck, I could name at least two dozen traditional bowyers who I would love to own one of their bows. In the end, it boils down to our individuality and I love that about the sport.:D

i been on another site where someone is selling a LAG that has been refinish, its a beautful bow. its a 1999 and its 53 @ 29″ and he is asking 600.and its autum oak. do u all think thats to much?
-
Turtlebunting, personally I think that is a decent asking price. A brand new Pl series bow is going to run between a 1000.00 and 1300.00 dollars, if you bought it today. Back in 1999, the asking price was definitely lower. The LAG is basically the same design as the PL series with the exception of the handle. The LAG has a larger grip and I have heard of several fellas who like the bigger handle design of the LAG. I think it is in the ballpark for a used Black Widow. But, the bow is eleven years old and it has been refinished. The askng price might be a little high. Perhaps you can talk the seller down 50 to 100 dollars based on the two aforementioned reasons. Ultimately, you have a decision to make because you could buy a brand new bow from some other bowyer for 600 dollars. And there are some excellent custom bows out there for that asking price. Tough decision.

I have 2 PLX’s and a PCH on order. Are they worth it? To me..YES. To others they may not be. I paid $1300.00 a piece for my 2 PlX’s, and $1200.00 for my PCH. The price doesnt mean anything. As long as you like it and you are happy thats all that matters.
-
Frasettor — No disrespect, as all things are relative. But “the price doesn’t mean anything” doesn’t hold water when you have to save and scrape and sacrifice to buy a top-end custom bow, as perhaps an easy majority of us do. Among other sacrifices, to buy a new bow I have to sell a bow. It ain’t easy. You are a lucky fellow. 🙂 snuffy

i look at it this way. i can 2 bows for what u paid for the PLX and 2 more for what u paid for the PCH. dont get me wrong black widow bows look wonderful. but when u have mouths to feed and bills to pay u realize thats alot money for a bow:roll: and i hope u enjoy those 2 great bows! one day i save up enough to buy one but for now i stay with my martin!!!!

I have a PSAx in Bacote and Ive been to some shoots and I have yet to see anything that rivals the craftsmanship and looks of the BW. And it smokes an arrow and is quiet, I would have to say Yes. You can get cheaper bows and I’m not saying they won’t shoot as good as a widow. It’s all about what you can afford and what your willing to pay.

im going to have to work some overtime and save up for a PLV. i think i like those the most out of th PL’S.
-
They are great bows. There is no doubt. They shoot great. They have a lot of kinetic energy, draw smooth, and are ultra quiet. They have more laminations in their limbs than almost any bow on the market. They also have great customer service.
Personally, I do not care for them.
I’ve gone to shows and checked them out. I have eight friends that all own custom models. I just can’t get into them. I think they all look the same.
There ARE a lot of bows that are easily comparable for less money but Widows are the Harley Davidson of bows. They have a following that will never be rivaled. I don’t care what anyone says…names sell bows. I’m a marketing professional and I’ve seen it too many times to be convinced otherwise.
I don’t condemn anyone for paying the money for one. I know so many that have and are happy. Shoot what makes you happy, just remember that they are an option…not the ONLY option.

Most if not all Harley’s do after being road hard 😛All joking aside, a buddy of mine has a take down recurve model forsale for $600, now I could own several Bama Bows for that price.

Or one Royal.
Honestly though…I will say that the damn things are tanks and they hold their value over time. I don’t know how many used ones I’ve seen in the last month and they always go for $600. In fact, I was surprised to find out that out of 9 of my friends that shoot Widows…all of them bought their first ones used and then ordered a custom one later.
New Bow Disease really hits the Black Widow guys hard. After they buy one they seem to want another one every year. 😀
Sooo many bows…sooo little time.

If you JUST HAVE TO spend as much money as you can for a bow, then yes they are worth it. To me, no. No bow is worth the money they and other custom bows go for.(just for the record, I can afford them if I so chose to. And, I have owned customs in the past.) You can get the same performance from tons of bows for at least half the price. I will admit, you can’t beat a custom for it’s beauty and fancy woods. It’s just what floats your boat.
-
Lets be careful about how we categorize “custom” though.
Not all “custom” bows are high priced. Bama, White Wolf, Maddog Archery, Northern Mist, etc all make custom bows for under $500.
I think too many people affiliate “custom” with expensive.

I think too many people affiliate “custom” with expensive and lets be honest here…most manufactured bows are wayyyy overpriced when considering what you can get for $500.
I like Martin and Bear but cannot believe what they charge for a manufactured bow. You can get a very nice “custom” bow for just a little more.

LimbLover hit it right on the nose….. 😛

I bought an SAB 58″ 59@27 used a few years ago for about $425. (The old all black model) It shoots great, and I use it in my turkey blind. No wood grain to admire on this bow, only how it shoots. Keep your eyes peeled, and eventually, you’ll find a Widow at a price point you may be able to accept. Not all good bows are new bows. Best of luck

I almost bought one of those all black models used. One showed up at our local shop one day for $350. It shot great but I’m not really a recurve guy though and it felt like I was holding an eight lb dumbbell in my hand.
