I finally was able to hit the NY woods yesterday for the first time since the October 1st opener. With only two days to hunt, I arrived at my honeyhole at 6AM, pretty early, to be sure to experience the first rays of sun over the West Point Fortress across the river, and the beautiful October foliage. I was not expecting that much more! A vague hope maybe!:) At 8AM, two does came by on the trail above the recently fallen Oak tree I was hiding in. The thermals were perfect on that very steep West facing slope and carried my scent downhill. I really picked a spot and made a very good 15 yards shot. The Zwickey Eskimo tipped arrow from my Shrew Classic Hunter passed fully and cleanly thru both lungs. The doe ran 45 yards, fell, kicked and died 15 seconds after the shot… I counted! I could see her, but still followed the blood trail, for practice. After a great birthday October 10, this was truly icing on the cake!

Note for Colmike: This is the Asbell hoodie jacket I bought at ETAR! First time in the woods too!:D

Historical note: The Continental Army shelled English ships moving upriver from right above the spot I was hunting! The trail that I take to get up there is the same they used to push/pull canons up there!! Cool, no?

Very Nice!!! Kinda cool that I’m 2500miles away and I can see that west slope in my mind(I hunted on West Point land)…

Good Shot, and neat historical reference too. Makes you wonder how they managed to do it without trucks. Like the stone walls around here.

Well done Alex 😀 I also love the historical reference. Thinking about those who came before us is one of the great pleasures of our endeavour I think. Knowing hard men walked the very trails you walk? That would be a rare treat I suspect.

Yeah, had a few weeks there where life took me in other directions, including much-neglected work. But I’m doing my best to keep that to a minimum for now. 😀
