        Hey guys,

I have renewed my membership with a different username because I changed my email address, so you may not remember me.

I have recently acquired an old Ben Pearson recurve that is in less than ideal condition. The bottom limb is a bit twisted, is there anything I can do to fix that? Also, the previous owner (who gave the bow to me at no cost) had all kinds of tape all over it, which left extremely sticky residue all over. I want to refinish this bow, but I’m not sure where to start. I tried to use some goo gone on the bow to take off the old tape residue but that didn’t work too well. I am thinking of sanding it next, but I’m thinking I should stay away from the fiberglass right? Any thoughts, tips, or ideas are welcome! Thanks.

          Welcome back.

yea twisted limbs can usually be repaired, sometimes with just overtwisting in the opposite direction, sometimes with a bit of heat applied. Do a search here for twisted limbs and there should be several threads. I had one thread called Ebay bow.

I think mineral spirits will clean the residue off,and on the limbs, I would use a very fine paper, say 600 grit or so, just to clean it up and prep for finish coat. On the riser, use what ever grit you need to get the old finish off. Be sure to post some before and after pics for us. I always forget the before part, too big of a hurry to get started.:D

            Hi Ben,

Welcome back. If the mineral spirits don’t work 3M used to make an adhesive release I used a lot when varnishing boats. I imagine they still do. It is a great product. Just squirt it on and let it set awhile and wipe it off. Easy as duck soup!
