Fella’s, I’ve been putting some money away for a new bow, with a Hunters Niche Predator in mind. I’ve received some excellent reports here from guys about these bows. But an almost brand new Bear Takedown has popped up for sale down here for a good price.

A feature I’ve always liked the look of in these is the tools free system. Does anyone have any comments about the Bear Takedown?

Oh also it’s a b riser. Is that just a longer riser than the a or is there more to it than that? I haven’t been able to find anything out on the Bear website

Welcome back trust the exercise was fun8). Don’t know anything about those recurves but if you can call or e-mail the Bear Archery folks they were very helpful in identifying my 70 K mag.

But aren’t you ready to try a custom R/D long bow:D

I agree Mike. Jim get ahold of Gregg Coffee! The Elkheart is a fine bow!

I honestly feel the Predator is the finest takedown recurve on the market. You will also find that Ron Pittsley will turn himself inside out to provide you with the exact bow you want.

                Jim,

I have one of my Grandfather’s Bear take downs from around 1970. Magnesium riser, the long one I think which is the C riser if I’m not mistaken. It is 56″ long, 48#@28″. Draws about 51-52# for me. The take down system works great! Old Grandpa Bear knew what he was doing when he designed that one and I have never had any problems with it. I love the bow, but the limbs aren’t the most efficient. I’ll second saving up and going for a custom recurve take down or long bow from a good bowyer. Now that I have one, I am ruined and can’t go back:)

I have a bear takedown. I had a bunch of trouble with it when I got it (new). Suffice to say the factory limbs failed after 50 shots or so. But that’s not a fault in the bow design, it’s a fault in manufacture.

So assuming the bow doesn’t blow up on you, I’d say go for it. I ended up getting some custom limbs made for it and I’ve killed a bunch of deer and a pig with it. I really like it for it’s history as well as it’s function.

The B riser is just a longer riser. I have the 64 inch version of the bow as I like longer bows.

It’s been a while since there has been any action on this thread so maybe I’m flogging a dead horse. I own a wood, “B” riser 1970 Bear Takedown and recently I had an opportunity to shoot one of the new Bear Takedowns. I didn’t like the feel of the grip at all. It is totally different than the older riser. I’d be sure to shoot the new bow just to see if it fits your hand. I have a fairly small hand and the new bow just wasn’t comfortable.

                      Ontario et al,

I think this has been one of those serendipitous moments in life. To help pay for it all I put my 70# Barta bow up for sale. As I was expecting to sell it I started shooting it again after a bit of a hiatus, and man I love that bow. Then the Bear takedown sold to someone else. So maybe I’ll just keep the Barta bow and live happily ever after?

It would be PERFECT if it were a 2 piece take down. So maybe a 2 piece custom long bow will make it’s way to me eventually, but at the moment, between my Barta bow and my super mag, I’m pretty happy.
