Bear spray vs. guns is a recurrent theme here. The link below leads to two excellent very short videos made for hunters, narrated by Craig Boddington, on using bear spray properly and it’s effectiveness. I thought some of you may enjoy them:

Thanks Dave, I hunt in black deer country but have never seen the need for bear spray in Minnesota. Now that night I was coming off the mountain in Eastern Oregon bow hunting elk, when I heard a small twig snap it sure would have been comforting.

I also hunt in black bear country–2 yrs ago a 16 yr. old girl took a 675lb bear with gun–picture on front page of local paper–thought it was a grizzly. A couple of years ago I was following and tracking a male blackie (300lbs from track depth) called him Bruce the bear. One day he turned on me at 10 yards and growled “leave me alone”.
Point is I carry bear spray even with black bears–they will prey on homo. Stump busting in the spring with blunts doesn’t give enough fire power spray is effective—used it once on myself:roll: Check the wind my friends:D

Hey now, I resemble that statement. 8)

We have A LOT of black bears here in AZ, very cool that it is rare to find one is totaly black in color, most are blonde, or dark red colored in the Santa Ritas…
I’m always armed in the Mountains (more for the 2-legged criminals), but I do carry bear spray also and I have system I haven’t tried but I think will work…
If it seems I’m about to become a bears chew-toy, I’ll take a deep breath, close my eyes and blast the pepper-spray from my head to my waist… And hope the bear doesn’t like spicy treats…

Yesterday I was out in our first snow with two other guys who still had bear tags. We followed the trail of a big sow for 2 hours until we caught up to her. We were standing on a stee hillside in some really thick tanoak and next to a stump. The uphill side of the stump was eye level with me. As we were scanning above us, the sow got up out of her bed from underneath the stump close enough to touch her with my short walking stick! It was all too quick and unexpected and so close that noone had or could take a shot. But it sure was exhilarating. I had bear spray but didn’t even have time to think about it. She turned and melted through the brush away from us.

Every place I’ve lived I’ve come across black bears at close quarters, with the exception of AK. (I don’t hunt them.) The only time I didn’t feel in control of the situation was on Vancouver Island. A large boar was feeding in a berry patch right alongside the trail and he did not want to move. Even with a German Shepherd Dog and two terriers accompanying my wife and me, he would not move. We found a different route.
Now that I’m bereft of the services of a large dog to keep me aware of what’s going on in the woods, I waffle from time to time on the carrying of bear spray for black bears. I have it but I almost never carry it. But every now and then, a black bear demonstrates for some unfortunate human the two essential rules about bears:
1. There are no rules about bears.
2. In doubtful cases, refer to Rule No. 1.
Dr. Stephen Herrero is THE expert on bear attacks. His perspective is worth keeping in mind on this particular subject: Stephen Herrero on Black Bear Attacks

In my corner of the world, I carry spray with me just about any time I’m in the backcountry, except the middle of winter.
