I’ve been shooting recurve for years now and want to move into longbows. I found these guys online and liked what I saw. Further investigation yielded good reviews, mostly by new shooters. However, I went to my first trad. shoot this past weekend and shot as many longbows as I could. This really opened my eyes to the differences there are in longbows, particularly in handshock. Some were just as comfortable as my recurve, while others were quite brutal. So I’m looking for more info before I take the plunge. I’d especially value the opinions of any longbow veterans out there. I have limited funds right now and don’t want to drop my savings into a bow that’s going to leave my wrist tingling. Any advice on other places where I could pick up a decent bow for under $500 would also be appreciated.

I have a friend that shoots Bama bows and swears by them. Additionally, I have not heard anything bad about them just positive.
However, I will say this buying a bow is a personal experience. I recently bought a bow without shooting it and can say that I am very thankful that I love it. On the flip side of that I have shot at least 100 different bows at different shoots, expos and many that I thought I would love (big name bowyers too) I found that I absolutely hated them. So, my recommendation would be to get somewhere you can try them if possible. There may be some shoots in your area that would have vendors and that would be a good place to start. Additionally, there is one place that you can buy new and used bows online rmsgear.com and they will allow you to return a bow if you don’t like it within one week. They are great to deal with and you can really discuss things with them prior to purchasing. That is where I bought my Spirit longbow and as I stated I love it. The buying experience was equally satisfying.
So, Bama may be a great choice. Better if you can try then buy or at least buy, try and return if not happy.
Hope this helps.

I can tell you that Nate makes a fantastic product for a very very reasonable price. A lifetime warranty is as good as it gets:D!! And he is one heck of a nice guy. I have been shooting my bama hunter non stop for the last few months and I am so confident in this bow that I am taking it to Canada this year for my bear hunt. This will be the first time I’ve felt comfortable enough to take a trad bow on this trip rather than my compound….. In fact I am hanging up my compound for good since picking up one of Nates bows.

I have 3 Bamas a Hunter Longbow, Royal Longbow and a 62in Royal Expedition and I have another in the works gonna be a 64in Expedition made with all American woods! Can’t say enough about Nate’s workmanship! The Hunter at $389 is IMO the best value for a custom longbow on the market, they are lite in the hand and very smooth for a straight limbed model! He cuts his shelf past center so they are very spine friendly as far as arrows are concerned! You can get an Expedition Hunter Reflex/deflex model for $479 plus shipping! the Expis are a longbow that shoots alot like a recurve! You can’t go wrong with either one!

I received my Bama Hunter last month and I will tell you without hesitation or regret that this bow is FANTASTIC!!!! The workmanship is outstanding, not a mismatch or miscolor of wood, no gaps, no tool marks, just a superbly crafted masterpiece. I was a bit nervous about ordering a 65# @ 28 inches but when you sting her up and get out on the range it just doesnt feel all that heavy (tell that to my sore forearms and fingers 😀 ) I will be shooting this bow exclusively this fall…hope to post some pics. Oh and I just found out that Uncle Sam may be transfering me to Alaska for the last three years of my military career…..good thing I did order that 65# bow huh?
Nate is a master in the old world sense of the master bowyer….I will DEFINATELY be buying more Bama Bows.
