I, for one, wanted to make sure and let it be known that I’m looking forward to reading the newly introduced “Backcountry” article each month in the magazine. 8)
I say this because in the editorial, Don Thomas mentions that there wasn’t much feedback for “The Ground Game”, so it went the way of the dinosaur.

I second that!

Thirded. I think it’s a great move.

I just finished E. Donnel’s river crossing article. Great stuff. I once camped in the Painted Desert. After setting up the tent on a little dome of a rise, the highest spot I could find. We hiked for a few hours up the dry wash. That night, after viewing one of the most incredible starry skies I ever saw, two electric storms passed through. That was very exciting to say the least. I kept looking up at the aluminum tent poles silhouetted against the electric sky. The next day we packed up all the gear and twice the weight in mud to find we had a 100 yard or so river crossing to do that wasn’t there the day before. We walked downstream until the channel widened and the speed of the current slacked off and were able to cross somewhat nervously, but safely. Sometimes things change and sometimes in a hurry. I look forward to next month’s addition to the Backcountry articles. best, dwc

I’m the first to admit that I’m a big chicken when it comes to river crossings…probably because I’ve spent so much time in and around rivers. I’d rather make a big detour to find a calm spot than chance it. Sounds like you made a good call, David – it’s easy to underestimate the power of moving water.

Thanks. I was really glad we didn’t step on a big hole out there. I could remember from walking the dry bed how smooth it was and was happy that didn’t change a bit. peace, dwc
