Got out today to hunt barbary sheep (aoudad).

After glassing this cone for a while I thought I could see one in the trees so I started hiking up and glassing as I went. Did some New Mexico stump shooting too.

The only sheep I found was a carcass. But I loved the time out.

Then the storm started moving in. Got to see a snowbow.

This country makes me realize I’ve got 63 year old legs. This is steep country and due to the wind direction I had to come in from the west which meant I had to start a lot lower. I went from 5,879 where I parked to 6,382 where I decided to turn around. Lots of loose basalt in clay/sand made things interesting at times. I would have had a heck of a time getting one down from up there if I got one. Hunting this stuff means almost the whole stalk would be on my belly and slow. I’ve gotten dang close to antelope doing that when there was little or no cover. Just a lot of mean cactus to watch for especially the ones that camouflage themselves. Have to take pictures of those next time.

Found out that a couple of guys got two rams off this cone. This is the biggest. My bosses son said he saw two more that were bigger than this one. Think I’ll spend more time on one of the other cones that’s a lot harder to access and is a bunch higher.

Beautiful country. Sure makes Eastern PA look like a walk in the park. Best of luck! dwc

                  “Congratulations”

Certainly is picturesque, but also a little rough looking!

By the picture looks like a well placed arrow .
