This will be the first year that I use wood arrows and man I am excited! They are shooting great out of my bow and have them dialed in really nicely! My question is what is the proper way to attach broadheads to them and to make sure that they are straight on the shaft? I figure it is just like installing field points apply the glue to the shaft then heat up the broadhead and push it down on the shaft. How do you adjust the broadhead thou to make sure that it is properly lined up? Do you add heat to it again and make slight adjustments or what?

I think you basically answered your own question, bro. Glue the head on, spin the arrow to check for alignment, adjust if necessary. Clean the BH with denatured alcohol before gluing just as you would a FP.

I like my broadheads horizontal to keep the sight picture looking as normal as possible. I dry fit them, mark the arrow for placement, then glue them on.

Jason Wesbrock did a good ‘how to’ on this in the Apr/May 2011 TBM. As soon as the head is on, throw it on a spin tester and hold a ruler vertical up to the tip of the head. Spin the arrow and if the tip points at the same place on the ruler the whole time you know it’s good. If the tip moves up and down you it’s out of alignment. You can generally do a little adjustment while the glue is still hot.

If you don’t have a spin tester, Wesbrock also showed his elegantly simple home made jig which I copied and can post pics of. It’s a bit of 2×4 (or similar sized scrap you may have) with 4 nails in it. It couldn’t be easier.

Awesome I will look into this! Does sharpening the blades throw it out of whack or anything?

nope sharpening wont change the alignment at all. mount them, spin check them, sharpen them, and take them in the woods.

Don’t forget to practice with them BEFORE you hunt with them.

They may shoot differently than your field points, and game day is not the day to discover that….

I successfully attached them and got them glued on and it was much easier than I thought. I took them to my back yard and shot them and wowzers they shoot great. I have them sharpened and are in my quiver ready for next Saturday to get here!!!

Very good. Wonderful to see the learning curve working. I love to watch any arrow hitting where I planned but there’s something special about a wood arrow with a broadhead that’s doing so. My part done well, yours also!
