It’s science fair season and my son wants to assess the effect of arrow weight and FOC on arrow penetration for his high school science fair project. He’ll be using his 47# recurve and Beaman MFX classics rigged w/ an assortmant of inserts, weight tubes, and point weights. to keep it manageable we’ll avoid broadhead design and utilize bullet points. We’d greatly appreciate any advice on:

        1. any pertinent literature sources for background.

        2. suggestions for target medium, particularly a repeatable substitue for bone.

        3. other great ideas.

        thanks.

Welcome, Matt. Check out the Ashby Library on this site — it is the bible of arrow lethality studies, arrow weight, FOC and much more. A great project. You might be able to find some cow and/or sheep scapula at your local butchers …

Thanks. My son’s been digesting the Ashby Library here. we do have a few butchers to check – thanks for the pointer. it’s amazing that, for as long as we’ve been shooting arrows, there’s not more written on the issue. thanks again.

My daughter is also doing a science fair project on EFOC. Can anyone describe for me the prop that DR. Ashby used at the Traditional Bowhunters Expo to demonstrate the effect of EFOC? Someone has posted the lecture series on youtube but there is no video.

              Tim
