Hello all,
I am new to this site, so please bare with me if this question has been posed before, as I am sure it has. I have started back shooting a recurve after years of using a compound. My problem is this, I am shooting a 60# @ 28″ but I only draw around 26 1/2″ so I’m lucky if I am drawing 55#. I have been shooting an Easton 2117 cut at 28″ with 5″ feathers, and using a 150gr head. My arrows are flying as if the spine where a tad stiff. Do any of you have any input as to another size shaft that will perform better. I was wondering about a 2016, but wonder if that is too light. I would appreciate y’alls help on this. Thanks -
Welcome BR549,
A couple suggestions: First, you might read some of the threads on bareshaft tuning so that you can be sure your arrows are a tad stiff. Dr Ashby/J.Wesbrock/Troy Breeding are the experts who respond to tuning questions quite regularly so you may want to look for them in your search.
Second, if they are indeed a tad stiff, add point weight to effectively weaken them. You’ll see a lot of threads on FOC/EFOC/UEFOC on this site as well. By adding weight upfront you’ll increase your FOC (which is a good thing) while also fixing your spine.

Mike,
I sure do appreciate your suggestions. I will take a look at what Dr Ashby/J.Wesbrock/Troy Breeding have to say. I will also try adding weight to the front and see what happens. I did shoot bare shaft on paper, and the back of the arrow is ripping about 3 to 4″ to the right facing the target. Once again Mike I sure appreciate it.Chris

Chris — I second both Mike’s welcomeand what he said about point weight. Most trad supply houses sell point “test kits” with a variety of weights, one each. Just keep going up until flight straightens out — you cannot have too much weight up front is my experience. Not only will it “unstiffen” your shafts, it will also increase accuracy and greatly increase penetration. I shoot 225 points with 100 insert sand 125 adapters from mid-50# bows. Dave

2117 are mighty heavy as well as a might stiff.
Id think a 2016 would be near ideal for you

I’m shifting to carbons, but I was shooting 2016s in both my 45# Wasp recurve and 46# Stewart LSS longbow with 175 and 205 grain heads, respectively. From my perspective that would put 2016s too light for a 55# bow, but try to find one on the cheap and give it a whirl.

Gentleman, I truly do appreciate all your input. I am glad I joined this board as I am sure I will learn a lot of good stuff from y’all. I am heading over to Arrowhead Archery in Tampa on Wednesday, and I am going to pick up a few different shafts, field tips of different weights, and some brass inserts. I will get this thing right even if it hair lips all of Georgia. Thanks again fellas, I appreciate ya. Chris
