what is the point of having a right, left or straight arrow?
-
Straight or off set a little is usually for field tip use (no broad head) arrows. Straight or off set can be used but the arrow and Bow must be absolutely matched to have good stable flight especially with broad heads. Helically fletched arrows does not hurt a thing with field tip use and also stabilizes Broad heads better. The arrow spinning in flight much like the rifling in a gun barrel helps stabilize a bullet in flight, shares similarities with the arrow and stabilizes quicker as it leaves the Bow. Right or left wing has been said that: Left wing is for R/H shooters and right wing is for L/H. I think this has to do with the rotation of the arrow starting at opposites to deter deflection of the bottom feather leaving the Bow. Primarily for those who shoot off their index with no shelf or rest. I shoot right wing and I am r/h and have never had an issue.:) I would recomend that you use Helically fletched arrows.

Through my years of shooting I have found that it doesn’t matter if I use straight, offset, left, or right. Like Hiram said, matching the arrow to the bow is the most important thing for good flight.
I grind my own feathers and use them all.

I am rh have always shot rw feathers, only because the Bitzenberger jigs that were given to me had rw clamps.Have great arrow flight with a slight offset and 5 1/2 inch shield cuts.

All I can say is this.. I found some aluminum arras from my compound days.. noted the fletch (vanes) were straight, and meant to shoot cock down through my old rest. now, I tried it cock up, changed to a 145gr tip, and I am amazed to tell you.. the arrow shoots, with NO SOUND. now, I know the spine is a bit much for my longbows, but, the vane travels between the space of my rest mat, and my riser wall (remember Cock UP) so the…5oclock vane is the “business” vane on the release. UNBELIEVABLE. zero…noSOUND. I’m gonna pursue this..thats for sure!!!

I hate to disagree with you all, but helical does matter when shooting a broadhead. Talk to any of the professional flecthers. Even in compounds, they offset the vanes for broadhead use. If you have any cross wind, or shoot more then 5 yard without helical, and you don’t get wind planing, then bless you. I’ve tried all types and could never get straight fletch to work with broadheads. Offset is better then straight, but I’ve always went with helical. I shoot left helical off my long bow because with right helical, the cock feather cuts my finger. The arrow rests on my finger when shooting a long bow. With recurves, I dont’ pay attention. Just make sure all the feathers are the same, don’t mix right and left.
