Four and a half years ago I went to a garage sale and found a Martin Mountaineer (ML-14) and approximately 3 dozen wood arrows spined for it, for 70 dollars so I bought it. I took it to the local archery shop and bought a new string for it. They tested the draw weight of it and it was 70# at 28″ just as it said on the bow. When I got home I decided to try it out. To my surprise (I don’t know why) I could barely pull it back. I thought there is no way I would ever learn to shoot with it. I never shot traditional before.

I went to the only traditional archery forum I found at the time and the folks there told me I would never shoot it well and that I should buy a lighter weight bow to learn from. Well since funds were tight at the time I couldn’t buy another bow so I decided after a few months of trying I would start a weight lifting program then I found a book entitled “Archery Strong”. A strength training program with the archer in mind. I trained dilligently.

I shot every day even in the winter at the local archery shop. To this day I shoot almost every day and since then I have become pretty proficient with it. Now I can pull the bow back and hold it with no problem. Now after 4 and half years I can hit the vitals on my Glen-Del Full Rut Buck in the vitals almost every single time at 10-25 yards. At 60 yards I can hit the target but it looks like bird shot but I am still learning trajectory.

I realize learning on a heavey weight bow is not the way to go but for those of you who have one and cannot afford another I say DON’T GIVE UP!!! It takes a great deal of work and dedication. Strengthen the muscles that it takes to the point where you don’t shake when holding the bow back for any given time. My archery trainer and other friends told me this year is the time that I should not have any trouble getting a white tail given the right opportunity.

By the way…I did finally have the cash to aquire a 25# bow that I used to tirelessly practice my form, which is everything. I spent many hours practicing my form.

All I can say at this point is wish me luck this fall and hope that I will have some good pictures for you after my hunts. Thanks everyone for your support.
