Was wondering if anybody here shoots apache style release.Have been shooting standard med style but couple days ago tried a few shots apache style it seems more natuaral and easier drawing for me.my biggest question is there a differance in tuning bow for the two styles as my bow is set rite now i went from shooting around 6 inch groups to around 3 inch groups .As always thanks for the help and advice.

Three under is my preferred method to shoot a Bow.

I switched from split finger several years to reduce my gap distance at close and have not looked back! I keep my Bows set at zero tiller to enhance the tune of my 3/8’s above nock sets.

Another good tip for good flight is to have a nock both above and below to keep the arrow from slipping downward when shot.:)

I have shot 1over and 2 under since I started shooting traditional archery (about a year ago). I was very frustrated as I could not get any consistency. After reading the last issue of TBM, I gave the 3 under release a try. I was amazed. I was still missing, but my groups were much more consistent. I don’t know how, but I have no windage issues with the apache release. It seems to be working great for me and my recurve. Even though it felt really weird the first few shots, I’m going to stick with it. Hope this helped.

I initially learned how to shoot three-under but moved to split finger as a lot of experienced folks recommended it. But lately I’m wondering if I should go back to three-under. I’ve a long draw (31″) and even though I have 66″ recurve I still find I sometimes pinch the release. A few three-under shots this evening provided a better release but I needed to change anchor and sighting so I’m still weighing up the pros and cons… 😕

I’ve shot both styles and find three below does’nt feel as if I have control of the arrow as much as I do with Med style. Seems the arrow is more secure and that gives on less thing to think about when trying to get the routine of shooting to become an automatic process. If I was to go to apache, a whole lot of things would have to change and I would rather stay comfortable as I think I probably would see minimal improvement in accuracy.

I’m going to try three under a bit, but I’ll have to really see some crazy good accuracy, I live with some finger pinch

The hard part is my brain after 33years or more split.

i was introduced to archery shooting target style recurves and using 2 below 1 above style and with points of contact on the face and all but since i started doing traditional arhceyr i have found three under feels a lot more natural. i have experimented with over grips, and none of them feel as ‘right’ as three under.

I like three fingers under.I shot split finger and I always got finger pinch. With the 3 under method, I can shoot all day in comfort.

To reply to the basic question, yes state of tune can be affected by switching from split to 3 under or vice versa. It should reexamined. If a change is going to happen for you, switching from split to 3 under, its most likely that a different nock point will be called for. It is also suggested that if you aren’t using 2 nock sets. one over the arrow nock one under, then begin doing so. But beyond that, although less likely, depending upon how/where you anchor your effective draw length may change, which will change th eamount of energy delivered to the arrow. Which in turn can show up as a change in dynamic spine.

Just switched to three under. So far I’m liking it. My shooting maybe a little more consistent. I didn’t change nocking point or any thing else and things seem to be working alright. Bruce

For close up Hunting (0-35 yds) Three under is the best route by far! Why you ask?? It usually (with a decent release) exerts a more even pressure on the limbs as the Bow is drawn and held at anchor. Not saying that positive tillered Bows with the spit finger is not, just saying that for most, the three under grasp on the string has advantages. One of these is that once you give it some time and get used to it, you can reduce the amount of pressure you have on the string by relaxing the bottom finger on the string at full draw. This provides less inputs on the string and reduces the amount of paradox effect the release has on the arrow. This can also be done with a split fingered release but has less the amount of leverage as the three under grasp provides due to the index finger being a distance above the middle finger at full draw.

Now the real reason I shoot three under! lol

I hunt from a treestand most of the time here in Arkansas for Deer. This elevated position automatically causes and angle compensation problem for me from high to low. I shot under a nice Buck three years ago with split fingered release and realized that I had not made the proper allowance for the angle because my “Gap” is much more in the Vertical shooting split fingered. The Gap is the distance between the arrow as it positioned on the Bow, and the distance between my anchor point and my eyes as it see’s the arrow point and it’s reletive position on the string. I made up my mind right then to shoot three under from that day forward and have reaped the rewaard of less gap as a result the three under grasp moving the arrow closer to my eye,, The rear sight. This moved my Point of aim from 55 yards to 32. Even with a 45 pound Bow and 450 grain arrows, my POA is still around 28 yards if I just put the point right on the spot to hit! Heavier poundage Bows will shoot a flatter trajectory and make it closer to a straight line. Simply by staying with your current anchor point and changing to three under, you may well have less elevation compensation and hit closer to where your pointing than with split finger. My Gap reduction or gain either moving up or down just one finger at my anchor point will move the arrow’s impact about 10-12 yards. Hope I have helped!!!:)

Well after reading this thread (and Hirams helpful post) I decided to see what all the fuss was about.

So for the last week I have done nothing but shoot 3 under. All I have to say is wow!!! Groups shrunk by about half, and my point on distance is a very acceptable 20 meters. And the gap change between 10,15,and 20 meters is so small that it borders on being moot.

Best of all though is that shooting three under allows me to take most of the pressure of my injury (severed tendon/nerve damage in my middle finger), virtually eliminating the discomfort that was affecting my shooting.

Only down side to this seems to be that it requires a very consistent shooting sequence.

As far as re-tuning my bow, just upped the brace height by a 1/4 inch and moved my nocking point up a bit. My longbow shoots 3 under just as well/quietly as split finger.

Man oh man am I glad I tried this out.
