I do, and I”m always scratching for steel to make em. Chainsaw bars, concrete saw blades and old saw blades whatever I can find. Stihl chainsaw bar I came up with made a nice one in a big knife which really holds a good edge. I cut it out with a hand grinder and Zip wheel. Built a charcoal fire in my grill and hair dryer to orange, let it cool slowly and was able to soften (anneal) so I could drill the holes in the handle area and work and shape the blade. After I shaped it and made a single bevel on the blade, I heat treated it in the same fashion I softend it. To bright red, to orange and grabbed it tongs, then dropped into the cut off fire exting can full of olive oil. Careful here, I wore heavy gloves and glasses. Turned out to be a good knife with micarta handles and brass pins. I ordered some Kydex and made a sheath. Worth the effort, plus you made it. I”ve got several that made which fits my personal needs in blade design etc.

A friend of mine uses leaf spring from truck’s and has some good results, also spent files, made a nice hawk out of a hoof file, keep suggesting he might like to make me one but so far that’s fallen on deaf ears.

I’ve made a few, but I wouldn’t call myself a knife maker by any means,so, I usually use Nicolson files or purchase a fine blade, the top skinner knife is a file knife, and the bottom is high carbon steel, their not finished, I still have to do the scrimshaw and add the final finish to them, I’m making these for a friend to go along with his Elk bow that I’m also making, What’s cool to me is that he shot the Elk that these knives, the stand, and the bow are made from, What a way to show off a trophy……and what looks like rough edges on the tops of the knives are actually fancy filework, sorry about the small pic.

Hiram,
I’d love to see your knives. Can you post some pics?
