heading out August 24th (start hunting the 26th)to Arizona on a Coues deer hunt. Starting in unit 27 near Alpine. Hope to mix in a little trout fishing. Have 7-8 days to hunt (have to be back to work Sept. 5th “labor day”)25 hrs drive time from my home in NW Wisconsin. Plan to tree stand hunt on routes to or over water.
This will be my 1st time to AZ I have hunted The Black Hills many times. but that is as close to this type of terrain and Elevation I have experienced. Any Advice is appreciated. Thanks Ron

I recall a feature article in Tradbow about Coues a couple of years ago, good place to start.
Happy hunting, Mark.

We spend our winters in southern AZ now, prime Coues country. Haven’t been down in a month or so and don’t specifically know about Alpine, but you should be aware that southern AZ has had a very wet summer and there is likely to be a lot of water everywhere. Better be prepared to do some glass-and-stalk hunting. Don

what Don said —
if you go to the AZ G&F website they have good descriptions of each hunting unit and where to go in the unit for different game. Most of the Coues deer will be in the lower elevations of that unit near the rim or generally further south. The area near alpine[north portion] is mostly mule deer – elk. I have not been in that unit in a while but the SW portion of it was good WT country. it is very rough / steep terrain — good boots and good glass.

What cyber said… That area is a bit north of prime Coues country, although they are there. More advice–at this time of year, be very careful about snakes. 13 species of rattlers in AZ, and they’re active now. Don

If you stay in Alpine, the trout fishing is usually good at Luna lake ( boat is best although you can shore cast). The Black River ( think creek – at this altitude ) is fun to fish, but it is best to walk away from the road access points especially on weekends. I used to enjoy hiking to and along the Black at the more difficult to get too sections, for a good day in the woods and fun fishing. Usually did ok. Quite a few Black bears in this part AZ and many are good size, so take care and be bear aware.
Have fun it is a beautiful part of the SW, and you will undoubtedly see game. Take your bow -you can hunt mule deer on the archery tag.
