I saw a story in NYTimes this afternoon about Walter Palmer, a dentist and archer, of Minnesota and killing of Cecil, a protected lion in Hwange National Park in western Zimbabwe.
I’m not down on one’s chosen hunt, as long as it’s ethical. Ethical, obviously interchangeable with legal and, obviously has different meaning to different folks in different areas, but there are a few key things we tend to agree on.
Attracting a collared lion out of his sanctuary by means of leading it out with a dead animal on your truck to a waiting, paying customer is probably one thing most of us would agree on as stepping over a line. This lion is apparently the darling of tourists and also the protector of his pride. The young in the pride may be killed by a new male in the territory, as is nature’s way with these animals.
The Times goes on to say that the lion was first shot with a crossbow, then tracked for two days to be finished off with a gun.
To say there’s public outcry is an understatement. The dentist’s website has been taken down, but there’s a mock facebook page up now to draw attention to it. The PH might be facing criminal charges.
Another shot heard round the world. Another example of how “hunting” can make a sore spot for hunting.
And here’s the link to the story in the Telegraph, http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/zimbabwe/11767119/Cecil-the-lions-killer-revealed-as-American-dentist.html

Boy these kinda people make me sick to my stomach. Another blow the the reputation of fair chase sportsmen and sportswomen everywhere thanks to ego driven trophy mania! Ignorance is zero excuse IMO. Your smart enough to make the money to pay for trips like that, be smart enough to KNOW WHERE YOU ARE! And if your gonna go up against the King of the Beasts for whatever reason is acceptable for you, have the backbone to match wits with him instead of HOOKING A WORM ON UNDER A BOBBER!!! Disgusting in every sense!
