Outside of the spring “rut,” turkeys — at least our mountain Merriam’s here in CO –are a whole nuther critter and much easier to get close to without spooking. That’s why I always buy a fall turkey tag for elk season. And too, you can take either sex, even poults, in the fall, and I’ll take a hen over a big ton anytime for Sunday dinner. But that’s all moot since we don’t seem to have any turkeys left here anyhow. I’m glad you do.

I wouldn’t be surprised that we’ve really had a big reduction of our birds in the panhandle. The drought has hurt everything. Quail are very scarce as are rabbits , etc. I haven’t been up to my hunting area much lately, too dang hot but I was up for a day a week or so ago and saw nothing but cows & horses. No doves or even just “fly around birds” as my daughter called them years ago. I imagine the pigs are doing fine though. I put a camera out to see what’s goin on. A friend traps pigs and he says they ain’t hurtin. He sent me pic of a big pig. It’s on my other machine so I’ll find it and post it later.

R2 — I’ve extremely hungry at the moment and my wife needs to gain some weight since I only feed her on elk. Do you think your friend would donate us a few prime porkchops? I trust that’s organic corn in the feeder. 😛

Man what else! We just got through eating organic pinto beans, organic cornbread and deer burger. Organic pig & beans not bad either. 😆 For that matter, neither is elk and beans! I must like beans ya reckon?
Now, if I was to mention my wife needing to gain some weight I’d be eating organic crow I imagine

What else!! Drought ain’t hurting that hog a bit. There was one last year that it’s back was as high as 55 gal. drum standing on end. Feed all of us maybe!!!!!!!
Far as I’m concerned it’s plenty traditional for me to carry my .45 when I’m among these guys. After all, a 1911 is older than glass limbed bow

Interesting feeder setup. I see some experience went into that. The hog wire under the feeder to keep the pigs from rooting around the feet and tipping it over. And the stakes to keep it in place.
I wonder how the pigs survive where the other animals don’t. Last I heard, pigs still need to drink.

The Canadian River, such as it is below Sanford Dam and Lake Meredith, is but a 1/4 mi. from this location. It always has some flow due to springs in the area, which by the way several have pretty much gone missing since the drought. I had two little trickle springs that were my “sweet spots” for mule deer passing from one canyon to the next. They be dry right now. I think I’m going to dig a hole in one of them and see if I can get some water oozing out. Indian trick that’s been in every thirsty western for years. 😀
