My truck put me behind schedule, so I wasn’t able to pick up my Elkheart…yet. So, in the meantime, feast your eyes on this beauty! Gregg did an amazing job. “Cracked” (literally cracked) birdseye maple limbs. Birdseye maple riser. Doesn’t the riser appear to have “coffey” beans in it? The antler tips are from Tyler’s first deer. Seriously, this is the sweetest looking bow I’ve ever seen. I’m actually jealous of my own son. 😆
-
That’s a real beauty Patrick. Lucky boy you’ve got there 😉
-
That is a sweet bow!
-
Sometimes, life treats us GOOD! 😀
-
Patrick,
That’s one great looking bow! I really like the limbs a bunch. Have to keep that in mind for my next elkheart. Can’t wait to see your elkheart Patrick. That is a great picture of him sleeping with the bow and pup!
-
Pat that photo is an instant classic! A boy with his bow and his dog, what more could he want?
-
Beautiful!!
-
I can’t wait to get that Elkheart home. It is a beauty!
Thanks guys, I love that pic too. 8)

Trust your son has an appropriate Fedora coming for x-mas to complete the picture:D.
Nope, I want both bows.:lol:
For some completely inexplicable reason, he doesn’t like wearing hats. 🙄
-
Wow – that is a stunning work of functional art! The limb veneers are incredible. Gregg really outdid himself on this one!!
-
That is really beautiful. To have the antler tips really brings it home. Fortunate family you have. I wish you good luck and safe hunts with your new bows! best, dwc
-
I knew those were some wild veneers, but under glass they are nothing short of outstanding!!! 😀

So… The description of the bow on Greg’s website says it’s a static tip’d bow. Looks like the shrew or elkheart type bow to me.
Are the tips static? Does your boy outshoot you? How’s it do?
You’ve a good looking boy and dog there. Something to be really proud of.

Yes, they’re static, per Gregg. I’ll take a short video of him pulling the bow back so you can watch the limb tip in action. You can tell the Elkheart and the Helms Deep are related, but they definitely are different.
He’s a very good shot. I’d say we’re pretty even, but he’ll be better than me…I have no doubt. The bow shoots great. Very smooth and it’s fast. He’s already shooting it as if he’s been shooting it forever.
And thank you, I appreciate the kind words.

Patrick — He doesn’t like hats because he doesn’t need a hat! That’s more hair right there than I managed to grow, cumulatively, in a lifetime! Of course, growing up mid-century, my father insisted I keep a “burr” cut, then came the Marines for whom a burr was way too long, then came baldness, revealing the true magnificence of the fully revealed human male skull! 😳
Is that a yeller lab pup … or a runted adult? It appears the latter. Man, if I could find a seriously runted black lab that has all the qualities of the breed, I’d be a happy man. Big dogs increasingly complicate travel. Much as I love ’em, I’m done with ’em after the current models go south.
Two new magnificent bows, a great son with great hair, and a small big dog! You must be living right. 😀

😆 That excuse don’t fly with me! I have very thick hair too, but that doesn’t keep me from covering it up. I just love hats. 8)

She’s a 12 week old yellow lab pup. I relate 100%, in that I was very reluctant to get him a dog because I remember all to well how much having one restricts travel options, but in the end, his persistence won out. Plus, I’m hoping the bow and pup will keep him out of trouble…at least to some degree.

Here ya go Steve:

Beautiful bow!
-
They look like string slugs. I put them on my longbow and they work well. I forget where i got them but somebody on here recommended them. What the static tip? Dwc

Two Tracks makes a felted wool silencer that looks a lot like that:

I’ve heard they work quite well.
And I just have to say – “Helm’s Deep” is a great name for a bow.

Absolutely gorgeous bow. I know he is proud of that one!

The silencers are indeed from Two Tracks. I really like the ease of use, simplicity, durability, and oh yeah they make your bow quieter too.

I learned about Two Tracks silencers from Java Man while at Kzoo a few years ago, where both had booths. While I absolutely feel they are radically overpriced for little pieces of felt (but what isn’t radically overpriced in today’s world?), I’ve used them ever since, for the reasons Gregg summarizes above: the most silencing performance for the least mass on the string. But hey, big rubber bands also work (until the shoot off) and cost nothing. All choices boil down to personal priorities, eh?
-
I thought I had remembered you saying something about those silencers on some other thread, Dave. I searched but couldn’t find it.
They make a HUGE difference on that Helms Deep.
Speaking to Smithhammer’s point, regarding the name, Helms Deep; I had wondered where it comes from. I assume it’s from Lord of the Rings, but only because every time I’ve Googled “Helms Deep”, I get a bunch of references to the movie.
