I was still-hunting along a very steep canyon, and had a Buck come toward me on the trail above. He stopped at 20yards and stared right at me, and since attempting a Bow shot at an aware Coues is looking for problems (string-jumping, etc), and since a Coues will “Never” turn it’s back to danger I went for the camera…

I thought I would get a great close-up of a P&Y Coues (90-100 3×3), so I reached for my camera and as I took his photo, he turned his BACK to me!!!!

Of course by the time I got the Bow back up he was bolting up-slope…

I could laugh about it afterwards, No photo and No shot, and thankfully it wasnt one of the Coues I’ve been hunting, but… No More Rookie Mistakes for Me…. (till next time I wad-it-up hehehe)

From what very little I know of Coues deer…..that is an exceptional buck. Cool pic.

That’s what I consider a trophy encounter. Congratulations! Any time you get that close to a deer in his own backyard you are doing a lot of things right.

I’ve been shooting trad-gear since I was 8years old, and at 52 I’m still learning… Lesson from this is- Dont turn-off the Hunting mode untill there is ZERO chance of a shot… Then turn-on photog mode… hehehe…
