        I am a new trad hunter.I shoot a 40lb KM.I am 73 years old,
and that is about all I can handle.I draw 28in,and am shooting 125gr Magnus.I am shooting 1916 legacy arrows.I
am concerned about penetration.I have set a 15yd limit on shots.what setup for best penetration?

At 19/64th’s of an inch, the 1916 is a very capable arrow for hunting big game….even up to twenty plus yards. If you think you would like to try carbon, stay with the .600 size since it is closest to your 1916 spine….600 vs .623, and should work great with the same tip combination.

Some folks will tell you to spine heavier with carbon and load up the front of center, but at 40# I think you will give away too much performance by doing that. A .600 carbon…Easton preferably (quality control)…will give excellent penetration on deer size critters at 40#. If I were you I would make my main concern “perfect arrow flight” with your broadheads. That is the most critical aspect of penetration….quality arrow flight.

If it were me, I would probably stay with the 1916 Legacy arrows. They are great hunting shafts with a great history.

I’m with George. Go with the weight of an aluminum shaft for a spine that light. Your carbons are going to be squirly IMO.

You may want to try some of the trad only carbons(600’s) from 3 rivers. They are relativly inexpensive. I’ve had good results with them with my 48@27 HH longbow. I shoot a 28″ arrow with a 200 gr fp/bh. This gives me a 425gr arrow. More than adequate for whitetails.

                Easton XX75 2018 out of my 55# longbow. 28″ with 200gr head.
