It’s been a hoot seeing all these new bows and I finally got mine finished today.
I havn’t started properly tuning the shafts, but did get afew minutes to atleast shoot it.
I just wanted to see how it would handle the 800gr. UEFOC arrows I been shooting in my other bows of the same weight. Lets just say if what I saw today is any indication of how this bow is going to shoot, then I’m one happy camper.
I told everyone that has known about it that I was going to build a all black bow.
Well, it’s all black,,,, in the name of the woods only.
Black Locust and Black Walnut that is… It even has black marcita on the tips of the limbs.:D:D

Show off! 😛 I really like the stippling on the hand grip. The slickness of the grip on compound bows, before bowyers (some) started wrapping them, was always a problem for me when wearing gloves. I once actually bought a bow because it had stippling like yours, which is both lovely and functional. Good work.

Dave,
When I started stippling my grips I found that not only did it help when wearing gloves, it really helps when your hands are sweating in the summer.
I’ve stippled the grip of every bow I’ve made for the past several years.
I’m hoping this will be the last bow I build for myself.
Well,,, atleast I find another piece of material that calls my name and says “make me into a bow”….:D

Troy,
That’s a beauty! I was wondering the other day if Black Locust would make a bow. I have a ton of it here that was blown down in storms last year. It makes a great firewood I can attest to that. dwc

Looking good Troy. I second Dave on the textured handle, it looks great. Hey are they wooden caps on your limb bolts? They look really cool.
Jim.

The stippling is unbelievable! show-off you are, indeed!!:D

Very nice Troy! Are the limb cores black locust too? Black Locust is supposed to make a good self bow. But I thought it might be a tad heavy for a recurve limb.
You’ve made a mess-a-bows this year. I thought you were retired…
Have fun shooting it!

Jim,
Those are real antler burrs.
Steve,
Anything that will work for selfbows or backed bows will always work better under glass.
Everything in this bow with the exception of the accent stripes is black locust. Flat grain on the back and bellt of the limbs. Edge grain for the tapers and limb wedges.
It seems to be as smooth a shooting bow as any I’ve made so far.
I wasn’t going to build another new bow for myself, but I scored on a hugh load of black locust (two pickup loads) afew weeks back and have had several people ask how it looked and shot in glass bows. Rather than explain it over and over I decided to make one so they could see.

Now that’s the Troy bows I’ve known and seen in the past. That’s another beauty bud. I’m with ya on the stippling.

I’ve had several ask why I made such a plain looking bow this time.
I’m hoping this will end up being my go to hunting bow. Had I made it super fancy I would have trouble using it for hunting (too worried about scuffing it). I let a friend talk me out of my last plain bow and since then I’ve thinking about making another, just hadn’t find the right material until now. Over time it will turn to a dark brown. A scuff here and there will only give it a personal look.

Beautiful work, Troy!
And I agree with everyone on the stipling = I wish it was an option on more bows. I’ve had several trad bows that are slick as heck once the hand starts sweating a little.

That’s a very nice looking bow. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Troy – I would love to make an all black locust R/D longbow to add to my collection. I will go over to your laminations page. Would you be willing to grind a set for me – core wood and veneer with Black Locust and a black locust riser as well?
-
Brother Cameron,,
I’d love to see you carrying an all locust bow. I’ve made a boat load of bows over the years and so far this bow seem to be the one that will never have a price tag put on it. If I decide I need heavier or lighter limbs I can make them without wondering if the material will match or look good with the riser.
Plain Janes suite me just fine.
Catch me off line and we will talk.
