fun people and great magazine. they do mix with training wheels. i’d say 70/30 traditional.

The Professional Bowhunters Society celebrates their 50th anniversary this year. We are a group of dedicated bowhunters who choose to hunt big game solely with a bow and arrow. The make up is approximately 90% traditional and 10% compounds. Most of our members shoot traditional because they have arrived to that place in their bowhunting life. We are a fraternal organization that stands up for bowhunting. We have fought hard and long against the inclusion of the crossbow into archery seasons. We sponsor a Youth leadership hunt that helps train future leaders so we can deepen the pool of bowhunting club leaders on both a national and state level. We have a youth scholarship program as well. If you have any other questions please check out out web site at probowsociety.net.

PBS is the only national bowhunting organization to which I belong. Although there is no official policy to that effect, PBS is overwhelmingly traditional, around 90% as Larry indicated. PBS has taken and continues to take principled positions on many issues of importance to all of us. It is a tremendous resource for anyone with a question to ask, or anyone planning a hunt in a new area. The level of “boots on the ground” experience is remarkable, and the biannual banquets feel like sitting around a campfire with old friends (and this opinion is from someone who really isn’t a “banquet” person.) Can’t recommend it highly enough. Don

I an a member of PBS and have been since about 1971. I joined as a Life Member as soon as it was available 20 or so years ago. It’s a great organization. I haven’t been as administratively involved with it as I have been with some other organizations, but I’d never miss one of their events. The membership is made up of die-hard bowhunters. I can’t recommend membership in this organization more strongly. Don Thomas commented about it feeling like a big campfire, and I’d go further to say that you’ll feel very, very welcome around that fire. G. Fred Asbell

I too am a member of PBS, but really wish they’d change the name. I know this is an old topic, but I’m betting they could double membership in short time with a more appropriate name. “Professional” has a distinct meaning with no room for roaming. It just doesn’t fit here and has a negative feel to it among lots of folks. Can’t count the times I’ve heard this from others, as well as saying it myself. IMHO

I was an associate member back in the 80’s,but let my membership lapse.

Still have the original annual magazine from back then with reg. member bios and pics. Wayne

                            ps shot compound then.

Being a paddy from across the pond, and thus a completely external observer, i thought PBS was an organisation for PROFESSIONAL hunters and figured its members would primarily be outfitters, guides, game managers, writers, coaches, etc. The name is definitely misleading 😕 Just an opinion from someone looking from the outside in.

When I was a kid in the 80 and first heard the name and could not find more info in magazines about it. I thought the same thing as Wexbow that I had to take classes or do something else related to archery at a professional level to join, so I never did.

Dave raises a significant concern that I’ve heard before from other excellent bowhunters. While the name makes sense–look up the dictionary definition of “professional”– it still causes lots of confusion. I’ll suggest that the matter be reviewed. Of course, if a change is made there would be no more “PBS”. Then what? The “OFBS” (Old Farts Bowhunting Society)? Don

                                    Ah-oh I think I heard a request for name suggestions…

PBS – Peoples Bowhunting Society (too communist?)

LBS – Liberal Bowhunting Society (too touchy?)

IBS – International Bowhunting Society (too inclusive?)

                                    And my favorite:

ISB – International Society of Bowhunters, which can of course be represented by another acronym, SOB. Which may be more fun.

Well I’ve tried this once and it disappeared. I’ll try it again, hoping that it doesn’t show up a 2nd time. The name Professional Bowhunters Society was a product of the time. Most bowshooters were competitive field shooters first and bowhunters second. Most shot 40 lb, 66″ bows and that’s what most of them took bowhunting too. There were very few deer and hardly anyone shot one (1960’s)and accuracy on the field range was more important. A group of guys who’d had some success wanted an organization that was about bowhunting…because everything was about competitive archery in those days. They wanted to identify their members as bowhunters, not paper-punchers. They set high personal ethical standards and heavier equipment as part of the identification package. They took bowhunting seriously…they were “professional” about it. Maybe it had something to do with the explosion of professional sports about that time, and players who were very good at their chosen profession were considered “professional.” I personally don’t think it was a bad choice at the time, and in my own hard-headed way I’m thinking being “professional” about this bowhunting is a good thing. And I understand that some equate it with doing things for pay, but that’s partly because we’ve gotten to the point of looking at everyting from a financial stanpoint…my opinion. gfa

Mr. Asbell, thanks for the history lesson of the origination it puts the name in a better perspective then. I will have to look more into joining then.

Does the PBS have much of a Canadian representation ?

I’m asking the question because at this point, Manitoba does not have crossbows included in any archery season. Mr Fischer has mentioned that the organization has “fought hard and long against the inclusion of crossbows. I’d certainly be in favor of that. I guess the next step for me would be to get my cheque book out ❗

Old Farts?? Then I’m a Pro at it!!!:)

Is 55 Old? I’m feeling pretty young,,,,still!! Quit the Snuff habit lately! I’m thinking that anything from Cigerettes to Spitting Baccy is bad and might cut me short a few years of “Woods and Wonder” so I AMMMMMM done with it!!!:)

Would NOT trade all the Snuff and Baccy in the world for ONE GOOD DAY,,, In the San Juans!! Even if, I heard Fools and Monkey Boys bugling just across the road! lol
