Finished up a selfbow for my wife last weekend. It was something of a surprise as she thought it was for a friend of mine. Hickory I cut last summer……..30# at 24″

Check out my daughter Indie giving her detailed instruction.:D

Too cool, TF! Nice family moment there!

Nice looking bow, too. I’ve never shot self type bows that were comfortable for me for repeated shooting, but I surely do admire the time, effort and talent that goes into those bows!

          Kudos!

Good job on the bow. And good idea to make your wife a bow. I should try that to get my wife to try shooting again.

Nice looking bow and it is awesome that your wife shares in the joy of flinging arrows…

Great looking bow!!! There’s just something about cutting your own stave and making a functional bow from it. Hope your wife enjoys shooting it.

Good stuff, Tail! I don’t recall having seen a selfbow with that elaborate a handle design before–usually it’s a straight handle with a small shelf, “Hill style.” I hope it lasts forever. I’m getting the urge to try another ‘selfie’ myself, and am really taken with the limb design of the Holmegaard. If it worked with elm it should work with osage.

Thanks, fellers. Dave, I have zero experience with it, but I bet osage would make a really nice holmegaard. I really like them, cool design….the history makes them even more appealing.

I’d like to scrape on a few more this winter, it’s a good time for wood projects. Etter, you’re up pal.:D

Great bow, Tailfeather. Taking the whole family out for an afternoon of stump shooting is the best! Cute girl you have there. Is your wife able to draw the full 30 pounds? My wife’s bow is 28# @ 28″ but she doesn’t pull it all the way.

There’s another style of lever bow that, imo, is even more eye-catching than the Holmegaard: The Mollegabet, aka “Molle”…which is rather fitting given the title of this thread.

Though I haven’t seen it in real life, this one is made of Osage and is a real looker.

I like that alot, Ben. Takes some real bowyer chops to make one of those!

I misspoke….I actually lightened it some from 30# after tillering it by doing some light belly scraping. She’s pulling about 25# and is doing fine with it.

Looks like the hickory took the stain really well. That’s a beautiful color. What did you use? Is it pignut hickory?

That osage bow is a sweet looking thing. But I can’t be swayed from the D shaped bows any longer.

Thanks. Yes, it is pignut. I used 2 light applications of dark brown Rit dye in alcohol. Then finished it up with several coats of tru oil, lightly buffed in between each coat.
