I was in the stand about 45 minutes before daylight. At about 7:30 I saw movement straight out ahead of me. My heart started pounding in my cheast so loud, I was sure it could be heard by the deer. When I was able to focus, there stood a beautiful eight point buck. He was about forty five yards away with a tall spike buck right behind him. The eight pointer was heading in my direction. He came to about thirty five yards and stopped, looking in my direction. He stood there for a while, looking back at the spike every few seconds. While he was standing there, the spike rubbed his face on a branch overhead and worked over a scrape. The eight made a visit back to the spike and I thought the show was over. The eight turned around and came back to thirty five yards. I was frozen as he turned broadside and gave me a nice look. Thirty five yards is as close as he came, which is ten yards beyond my self imposed limit. Those two gave me this awesome show for several minutes. It was great. Before I left the woods today, I had a smaller five point buck come within four yards of my stands ladder. He was fine until he smelled the branch that I accidently rubbed up against. He took off like lightening. I had one more small buck come in to about eight yards, but spotted me. He took off too. I didn’t get a shot at anything today. I didn’t even get to draw my bow, but it was a great day. This being my first season hunting deer, I have had an incredible time so far. I can’t wait until my next time in the woods.

Cherish that beginners luck! It won’t last long enough…

I was at the butchers shop a couple days ago and there was a guy there dropping off his first deer. It had to be over 200 lbs and had a 12 point beautiful rack. It looked like a cow hanging in the walk-in.

The butcher asked the guy if he was going to get the deer mounted, and he said: “No, it’s just my first deer, I’ll wait till I get a good one” I informed him that, sadly, in North Carolina the deer he had harvested was probably the biggest he would ever take in the state. Of course, he didn’t believe me.

Ahhh, beginners luck is wasted on beginners….. 🙄

If you get the old boy, don’t forget the pictures! Good luck.
