Well, I tried a different combo yesterday, not a carbon arrow though. I suppose I could try some lighter shafts but funds and time prevent buying lots of different carbon shafts.
I do have quite a collection, from a lot of years of shooting, of alum arrows, and tried some Easton 2018’s that had the 135gr home made inserts in them, but instead of the 200gr Grizzly head and the steel taper, I tried a 150gr Magnus I had, and bingo, excellent flight. I didn’t bare shaft it but looking at the flight, I think with the proper field point it would fly perfect.
So instead of the steel homemade shaft insert, I used the standard aluminum inserts, with the 200gr Grizzly single bevel head, and 100gr threaded taper, for a total arrow weight of 686gr. The best part is these just flat work in this bow. I practiced out to 15yds today, and was getting worried about the heads shaving feathers.:D
That was a good thing. I have my wheel bow setup for this season, but once I make meat, the recurve will come out. Monday AM I go out to a stand I set today, that overlooks trails used by both pigs and deer trails. Some of the trails are at about 35yds which is well beyond my recurve abilities. I have tried to hunt that canyon on the ground and the winds are impossible to avoid, and they are constantly shifting.
Once up in the tree today, the winds are constantly blowing away from the trails, perfect for my position. There is one trail the pigs use from their bedding area that’s within 15-20yds from my stand, and I am hoping I’ll be able to take a pig there.
Which ever shows up first (or at all) either pig or deer, I have both tags.
Now that I have the recurve tuned with heavy arrows and good heads, I hope to do some damage with them.
I have always seemed to have better luck with aluminum arrows, for some reason.

Handirifle,
Are you hunting public or private land? I’m not looking to swoop in on your action or anything like that. I live in northern CA right now, but the only place I can hunt pigs is on private land in Sonoma. Luckily I have a friend that invites me down once a year. Anyway, I’m constantly looking for public land with hogs so I can keep hunting after deer season and your post intrigued me.
Happy hunting!

It’s public land, but it’s landlocked BLM land. I live on a private dirt road that has a locked gate at the main road, and only residents and their guests come in. As you might have guessed I am very fortunate. I have a small lot (3 acres) but the folks around me have big lots, like 160 each, and one fellow has 320. i have almost exclusive access to two of the 160 acre parcels and am working on the guy with 320, but am not hopeful on that one. Oh well can’t have everything.
On the pigs, I have been batting zero out there so far. However, my wifes’ sister has them coming onto her place and rooting up their plants and grass. Problem there is they don’t come in till about 1:30AM or later. I was there a few nights back and about 20 of them came through. A real sight to see.
One tip you might try, if you get to some public land, that has a dry river bed through it. These pigs make their entrance from the river bed close to my sister in laws house.
If I manage to get one from my tree stand I will most assuredly post pics of it, trad bow or not.

Well it seemed like one anyway, but after many sits at the stand and seeing NOTHING, I’m beginning to think they are using it late at night.
A real bummer, I finally pulled the stand from that area. Season (archery only) is over on Aug 4th, I think, somewhere around then, so I might take a slow walk through the area, only the next hill over. I have hunted that area numerous times in the past, with a lot of sign, but have yet to see an animal.
The deer are all over here. I drove to my stand the other day and on the way there, I jumped 3 bucks, with a 2×2, a 3×3, and I am pretty sure one was at least a 4x? but too far to tell for sure. Those three guys were with 4 does. That was about 150yds from my house but on land I do not yet have permission to hunt :(, sadly. I am working on that, but not too optimistic, since the owner is a vegan .
Oh well, life goes on.

Hey that’s how it goes, most of the time! A-zone is done on the 4th. I’m heading down to B4 for the week, which opened Sat. There’s supposed to be a bunch of deer there, it’d be nice to just SEE them !
Ate least you know there are legal bucks in your area. And have heart with your vegan neighbor. My friend and I have converted 2 veggies to wild game, one with venison backstraps and the other with blue fish.
