I’m getting back into archery after a 15 year break or so. I was heavily into shooting back then and still have dozens of wood and aluminum shafts. My bow is a Shafer Silvertip Fast Flight capable. There’s a lot of new stuff out there and I’m just getting back up to speed. My first question is on the new string materials. What are folks recommending? Before it ws Dacron or Fast Flight. Now I see D97, 450 plus, and others as choices over FF. I’m sure this has been discussed before…any links to past threads?

Carbon arrows are the next thing to learn about…..

          first rule!!!!

If your gonna talk about a fine piece of shooting equipment like the SST you have to show a pic of it..:D:D:D

          Now on to strings.

If you have been gone that long you are in for a shock. There is more string materials on the market today than you can shake a stick at.

          450

          450 plus

          452

          452x

          8125

          DF97

and alot more that I just can’t think of right now.

One thing to think about. Alot of the new materials are hard on bows unless you get one that has padded loops.

I used to try to keep up with all this, but since have just found a string maker I can trust and let him send me what he thinks is best. If I like it, I then know what to order. If not I tell him my concerns and he will do something different the next time.

Welcome to tradbow.com, Jockey. Troy’s info is solid. Will you be making your own strings, or buying them?

I’ll be buying them. Looking to get a couple broken in before tuning with new arrows…i just need to try some of these carbon arrows. Right now the arrows I have shoot good with the Fast Flight and the simplest option is to stick with what I have. It was all tuned years ago and seems to be right where it left off.

I make strings for a company and have found on most bows that ultraCam seems to me to be the best material out there. Very high breaking strength, without the creep. 10 strands, Pad to 16 in the loops with B55 and your good to go.

If its a recurve and has carbon back and belly UltraCam seems to be a bit louder for whatever reason and then use D10. use the same strand count with same padding.
