I’ve found it somewhat difficult to find news of archery at the Olympics but here’s a nice little article. The movie Brave, and the Olympics in general, have helped get my kids out in the woods with me.

Another bonus is that Brady Ellison (I believe he took silver for the US) is an Elk hunter. Rock on Brady!!!!!! Here’s a blurb (from Outdoor Life):
Wish there was more coverage.

My sister lives in London and managed to get tickets to the archery final. I couldn’t make it over because of other commitments, ugh, but my parents went and had a ball. There was a “try it” section where people could give archery a go which was a great idea. I don’t think the cricket chaps were too pleased with their hallowed ground being taken over but it did make for a pretty cool backdrop. Just read from another post that the South Koreans built a replica of Lords in preparation for the games – now that’s some serious prep!

Sheesh, look at that guy’s setup! Looks like it’s made of legos, unistrut, and a baseball cap. Wonder what he moves through the woods with…

You can bet what he carries to the woods doesn’t look anything like what he has in his hands in the pic.
Still you have to remember, it takes different toys to play different games. Would you want to bring a football to a basketball game?
Atleast it only has one string.

Hitting the “10” ring on a target at 70 yards is a hell of an accomplishment. Doing it consistently, with one string and no mechanical release is seriously impressive. Imagine being that accurate at a distance 2/3 the length of a football field.

Even though the appendages made the bows look like Sputnik, they were recurves non-the-less. Even with the sights and clicker, watching these shooters is amazing. What impressed me about Brady Ellison is that he is not “shy” about being an elk hunter. He sends a positive message and might actually get some kids interested in the sport(s). Not even sure what he hunts with, but still. And as far as skill, I wish I was that good at 20 yards. Forget buck fever, what about the world watching?
