Reading Dr. Ashby’s work, and all the posts on arrow weight got me wondering about mine…..

I’m shooting 505 gr out of a 51@28 longbow….though only drawing a shade under 27″…..target criiters are whitetails and piggies.

        I’m shooting 30″ GT3555’s with a 225 gr head/adapter.

Could I move up to a 100 grain insert (giving me 325 grains up front)? Or would this be too much weight, and weaken the spine of the arrow?

Or who even knows without monkeying with it.8)

Assuming your current set-up shoots fine, it’s likely that adding 100 grains would cause your arrows to be underspined. If your draw lenght is under 27″, you could shorten your arrows accordingly though, and probably make up for the spine issue.

There’s really no way to know if a set-up will work or not without trying it, as there are always unknowable variables involved in the equation.

If you are getting good arrow flight I would say you are good to go. You are pulling about #47-#48 at your draw with an arrow weight of over 10gr./per/lb. of draw. Some might say it’s not enough for bigger hogs, but it’s certainly enough for deer. And, at your draw weight, just adding more weight to the arrow most likely won’t make it any more effective on hogs than the set-up you have.

Is your set-up enough for hogs? There is a great thread on that subject here on Trad Bow. Check it out.
